Why in the world would mookie sign an extension after a trade rather than just play it out and see what he can get in free agency next offseason?

      I used the word try.

Why in the world would you trade for Mookie Betts and not try to get him to agree to an extension?

I understand, it just makes no sense for mookie to sign an extension rather than just play it out this year. I think any team that tries to get him will be taking an enormous risk because I highly doubt he signs an extension before free agency next offseason.

Clear salary in an attempt to get Betts, who's making $27M this year.

          Machado - $32M
          Myers - $22.5M
          Hosmer - $21M

Either way if San Diego trades for him their intention will be to re-sign him, whether that be to an extension after the trade or if that means next off-season. In both cases being rid of the money left on Myers' contract would be a huge help.

I can think of 350 million reasons Mookie may not want to test free agency

              • Castellanos' deal has deferrals:

Here’s the full structure of the four-year, $64MM contract, per the report and previously reported information

                2020: $16MM salary with $10MM payable during season and $2MM payments on January 15, 2021, February 1, 2021 & January 15, 2022
                2021: $14MM salary with $10MM payable during season and $2MM payments on January 15, 2022 & January 15, 2023
                2022: $16MM salary with $12MM payable during season and $2MM payments on January 15, 2023 & January 15, 2024
                2023: $16MM salary with $12MM payable during season and $2MM payments on January 15, 2024 & January 15, 2025
                2024: $20MM mutual option ($2MM buyout)
Add it all up, and this is the full guaranteed payout schedule for Castellanos:

                2020: $10MM salary
                2021: $10MM salary + $2MM (1/15/21) + $2MM (2/1/21)
                2022: $12MM salary + $4MM (1/15/22)
                2023: $12MM salary + $4MM (1/15/23)
                2024: $2MM buyout (or $20MM salary) + $4MM (1/15/24)
                2025: $2MM (1/15/25)
It should be noted: once earned, a given season’s salaries will still be paid by the team even if Castellanos opts out. He has two opportunities to do so, after each of the first two seasons of the contract. Should he opt out, Castellanos would sacrifice the ability to earn additional money under the contract but not the right to receive the deferred payment for what he had already earned.
I think that last line means even if he opts out in year 1, he'd get the $10M plus the $4M of deferrals paid in 2021, etc.

                • The Brewers signed David Phelps to a 1.5M major league contract so there goes the idea of giving him a minor league deal.

Yep alot of guys we had wanted on Milb have either signed Milb with contenders OR ML deals

Still a few RP out there however. NOT Strop-Strop to Cincy

We are talking with other teams to see "deals" for guys which is why havent announced Kintzler or Joyce yet. We are trying to see who to DFA or trade and have a deal ready for when its time

                    - - - - - - - - - -

Some smoke about Clint Frazier to Miami for a P or even Miami getting into a 3 way with Colorado and NYY. Frazier/salary/prospects to us

Colorado is talking with NYY hard on Arenado. Something to watch if it gets more serious-they want arms and NYY dont wanna trade theirs

If this idea is trading Cooper/Aguilar, assuming Dickerson or Joyce can play some 1B for 2 1/2 months, and Frazier is just acquired, that works for me:

                      Alfaro, Cervelli
                      Cooper/Aguilar (Dickerson/Joyce/Cervelli)
                      Isan
                      Rojas, Berti
                      Andeson
                      Dickerson, Ramirez
                      Villar, Sierra/Brinson (Berti, Ramirez)
                      Frazier, Joyce

However, this keeps going back to Rojas for me - trade him, move Villar to SS, and STILL trade for Wil Myers (and a ton of prospects) to be that final bat. I'd love this team. It's basically replacing Cooper and Rojas, with Frazier and Myers (and 2-3 really good prospects in minors). The money is irrelevant.

                      Alfaro, Cervelli
                      Cooper/Aguilar (Myers)
                      Isan
                      Villar, Berti
                      Andeson
                      Dickerson, Ramirez
                      Myers, Sierra/Brinson (Berti, Ramirez)
                      Frazier, Joyce

Ideally, maybe you also trade/DFA Sierra, put Brinson in AAA if you can, and bring in another 2B/SS/3B option for cheap, and just use Myers/Berti/Ramirez/Villar in CF until Monte is ready in the summer. Then harder decisions will have to be made.

                      • Alot of teams are could be trying to go thru us to get others

                        NYY-Arenado
                        SD-Betts

Havent heard much on Myers for few months and like said some smoke about 3 way with Miami/Colorado/NYY. NO idea on names other than Colorado likes our P,Arenado wants to go to NYY and Miami likes Frazier and some prospects

Miami is more concerned about trying to work out trades to get Kintzler and Joyce signed right now. Talked Conley/Urena/Cooper/Dugger/Elieser with teams

Matt Joyce deal with Marlins is an MLB deal and could be announced today. Miami has done a lot of good things this winter. Should be much better.
