I'm surprised that Harrison and Guzman are listed as top 100; performance hasn't supported it. Alcantara seems like a stretch as well. Lopez and Niedert are looking more impactful to me. Richards too. He's just a few innings shy of the PCL leader list, but would top the entire league with his ERA and WHIP.

    • Nice write up on Pablo Lopez from Baseball Prospectus:

Pablo Lopez, LHP, Miami Marlins (Double-A Jacksonville)
Three-quarters slot; repeats his delivery; plus command and good sequencing keeps hitters guessing. Throws 4-seam, 2-seam and cutter and can work them all around the zone; does a good job of elevating the 4-seamer with two strikes to get swings and misses; can get the 4-seamer up to 95, but works at 91-93; 2-seamer is his feature pitch and has heavy sink; the cutter comes at 87-89 and shows hitters another angle. Used the curve at 72-75 as mostly a show pitch but it flashes above average potential with good depth and his ability to spot it; can vary his looks and timing well enough to control the running game; overall skills and moxie to succeed at higher levels; Mid-rotation potential if everything falls together.

Despite modest results for both Lopez and Richards thus far, I'm totally on board with their potential.

        • Richards potential is a bullpen piece. He is not a starter in the future.

Not a long article but a nice little opinion on Guzman and Devers from some scout. Guzman is 95% going to be at least a filthy closer, but man if we can get him in the rotation long term with a reduction in his walks would be huge. I really gotta think that one of these upper level minors guys becomes more than what is expected of them between Guzman, Neidert, Alcantara, Lopez, Caleb Smith, and im probably forgetting someone.

Before the injury Smith was already exceeding expectations.

Agreed. I really liked that Cooper/Smith trade the second it was made and it looks great so far. Smith is my favorite type of mid rotation guy in that he isnt an ace but he k's a ton of people.

The walks are great. I get it.

Not that they care about service time because that's who they are, that sets him up for a full year in AAA to call him up June 2019 (deflect super 2). We can dream.

                    • NUmbers in AA were a bit similar to Brian Anderson last year. More k’s but more walks too. Will be interesting to see if he shows the same jump in aAA BA showed last year.

He reminds me so much of a lefty dan uggla. Not in career path but in player type. Maybe a little less pure power but a little more plate discipline.

Among baseball insiders I've spoken with today, Trevor Richards' outing last night is still a topic of conversation. Scouts say you could put an 80 grade on that changeup from last night. It's a plus, plus pitch. #Marlins
Not really a prospect but figured this would go here. I didnt think Richards had much more potential than a #5 rotation guy or a long man, but he has really impressed me this year and is another guy who has done everything he can since he came into the organization to continue to be thought of highly as we move forward with the rebuild. He's at nearly a K an inning despite not having an electric fastball. At the very least he looks like he can be a hell of a middle reliever with an elite change up and an average fastball that is under team control for a while which isnt bad for a former substitute teacher and guy who was in indy ball 3 years ago. I really think our rotation is in great shape long term despite a lack of a true ace as of right now. And its a damn shame that this sudden depth of MLB quality starting options is available after we spent the last how many years not being able to fill out a 5 man rotation full of at the very least 5 MLB quality starters.

Just thinking of some of the names gives me nightmares and really shows how this team managed to be so mediocre/bad for so long despite having quite a bit of top end MLB talent in guys like JT, Stanton, Yelich, Ozuna, Jose. Nicolino, Volquez, Worley, Koehler, O'Grady, Locke, Cashner, Cosart. As Trump would say- "SAD!"

That would be something if they got two 3/4 SP from out of nowhere - Smith and Richards.

Richards has a nice FIP as of today.

His K rate has impressed me the most out of anything. We have a logjam of mid rotation guys who pitch to contact more than swing and miss guys, so k'ing more guys could be what allows him to stand out or at the very least have a long term future here out of the bullpen. Not that they have much in common stuff wise, but I could see him having a Wittgren type tenure with us (moreso before this year) as a very useful cost controlled middle reliever.

I hadnt really watched him and his stuff as closely as I would like so hearing that his changeup could grade out as a 70-80 type pitch really impresses me.

Also, can anyone tell me why the hell he has gray hair?

Some people are like that - I had a friend in high school who had a lot of gray hair popping up
