His floor moving forward is decent. He can still run and his glove is still good. He had an awful year. Soler had an awful year the year before as well. It happens. The white sox entire season was a train wreck last year. He has a great track record. He had knee problems all year last year. If he is healthy, he is a good player with a track record id bet on.

    • We signed yonny chirinos, a former ray who was pretty good as an opener for them years ago prior to injuries

      • several different reports of marlins talking with the pirates about pitchers. Namely edward cabrera. I wouldnt trade cabrera right now unless a team values him at what his peak could potentially be. would feel like dealing him at his lowest value. Only way i would do that is if we go full retool and get temarr johnson and another guy closer to the big leagues. Highly doubt they would do that so i dont really see the fit. Maybe henry davis, but would they deal the number 1 overall pick for cabrera?

Nothing outside of johnson really feels like it's worth trading the upside of Cabrera.

        • missed this but we also signed catcher curt casali last night. another former ray. just feels like the denbo/jeter regime all over again except former rays instead of former yankees. Casali has had some decent years in his career but is just a guy.

          • All of the “reports” of the Pirates and Marlins talking about Cabrera are rando Marlins Twitter guys with less “sources” than Mish

it's not. Some of them are accounts like that, others are Jason Mackey, the pirates beat writer from the pittsburgh post gazette which is a reputable source. Another spanish marlins reporter Andres Bolivar is saying the deal is close. Mentions Braxton Ashcraft and ji-hwan bae as names being discussed.

              • the names mentioned for cabrera would make me pretty pissed if that is the return. All slap hitting middle infielders and ashcraft, who is good but again, why trade cabrera for a pitcher?

                • 5 of the top 6 pirates prospects according to BA are pitchers. I just dont get dealing Cabrera if it involves pitchers. We need bats if we're trading him. We have pitching. If youre going to get a pitcher as a major part of the deal, just keep him and his high ceiling.

                  • i doubt Johnson would be involved, but have to wonder if O'neill cruz would make sense as the centerpiece off a lost year as a highly toolsy SS when they have a bunch of middle infield prospects.

                      Links?

Those two are hot garbage for Cabrera IMO. I would be shocked if those aren't 2nd/3rd or 3rd/4th names in a package.

I doubt they move him, but maybe they offered Keller an extension and he said no thanks. In that world, this starts making some sense (with presumably Miami sending back something else with Cabrera for Keller/Bae/Ashcroft, like maybe even Edwards as Bae is pretty redundant with Edwards you know, etc.).

We'll see. I am open to blowing them away for Cruz or Hayes though if a much larger cough-luzardo with cabrera-cough deal is being discussed and these are just the secondary guys leaking out.

And what about injured Endy? Injured Endy lopped into that is *really* interesting and sets up C for years and years on paper.

                            • Actually maybe Davis or Endy makes sense here. The Marlins just signed Casali so they have a whatever backup all of a sudden, and could ship Fortes (a lot of control) out as part of a trade so Pittsburgh is really covered this year and sets up Davis/Endy + Fortes next year. Maybe Delay would come back too since they signed Grandal and he becomes the Marlins backup this year.

I think I am setting myself up for disappointment here, but absent a huge longterm upgrade in the field and that can only come from Cruz (unlikely, would be selling low), Hayes (big contract), Davis (massive draft pedigree), or Endy (hurt) from their personnel, or getting Keller (great # 2 SP) for right now purposes and Pittsburgh is playing the long game, I don't see how they can justify moving Cabrera.

Guess we'll see. But I'd be on board quickly for something like this:

-Davis/Delay/literally whoever, sure Bae and that other FV35+ dude. Davis can split C/1B/LF for this season and get a full year of build up to be primary catcher in 2025. Maybe 50+ times behind the plate this year and Bethancourt/Delay each have their own personal SP I guess. Bae has an option and he can fight Edwards for a spot.

-Cabrera/Fortes/parts we don't care about. Endy/Fortes is a really great longterm C combo IMO, and Cabrera helps them now

That makes sense to me to respect both Cabrera (could be an ace, but is he really a SP or a bulk/RP) and Davis (could be a mashing C, but is he really a C and going to end up as a DH even if he hits) upside. Maybe a solid third player would have to be in there for the Marlins, but absent getting Cruz/Hayes/Davis/Endy/Keller, I'd keep Cabrera more than likely which is the point here. I really hope they don't send him out for junk as I'd rather him explode here and bet the upside then bet for that happening and trade for a quarter.

Expected for me. He shot too high. I think they'll lose Scott to close it out.
