  • 2022-2023 Offseason Thread

Sadly enough, I'm able to copy-paste most of last season's offseason writeup......the only part I removed was the Jeter quotes since Jeter isn't here, and Kim's quotes about money.......I could've replaced it with Kim's "hope and luck" comments, but I'd have to type that out lol.

Well, with the conclusion of yesterday's game, the Marlins' season is over, so we can shift into offseason mode. Obviously no moves will be made until the conclusion of the WS, but we can start a thread/the discussion anyway.

The big question - will they spend and make moves? For me, if they don't make an honest effort to - or don't - acquire several guys via FA and trades, I'm just going to take Stanton's advice an "watch from afar" - I'm not going to put in the time and effort of following the team and all their games if ownership won't put effort and money into building it. I've been supportive of the rebuild, and obviously on the pitching side, we've done well. They need to complement that and get the offense we need to compete. Getting scrap heap guys and rolling the dice as usual isn't going to work.

Obviously we won't know what will happen, but it's time to put up or shut up. Even die hard fans are ready to jump ship - I hope they realize this.

    -----

The pinning on "hope" and "luck" by Kim is not encouraging......I expect another lackluster offseason for the team.

    Barry Jackson

    @flasportsbuzz
Kim Ng, asked if Marlins lineup needs minor upgrades or major upgrades: "It's hard to say... For some of these guys, they have performed well. Soler had a 48 homer (season). Garcia had 29 (once). To ignore what they've done in the past wouldn't be smart on our end."
Is she just trying to play coy and fool everyone into thinking they'll do nothing, so when they do something it looks better?

Like how can you make those comments with a straight face?

I hope that's what she's doing, but my money would be on that being the official stance they take. They probably make one significant trade, assuming she can finally pull the trigger, and a couple of low money FA moves, and try to sell the fanbase on a bounce back on their previously failed moves.

Cherry picking Soler's one good year when he's been replacement level at best essentially every other year, and citing Garcia's one outlier HR season, when he hit under 20 HRs every other season but one (where he just hit 20), is certainly something. And the suggestion that ignoring those one seasons would be a mistake, while implying we should ignore the bulk of their careers, including just how poor they played last year is absolutely wild. She's really bad at this part of her job.

There is more to hitting than HR, Kim. They are objectively poor hitters in basically every aspect.

Espada is also interviewing today. He seems to be one of the favorites among fans and media. It sounds like they're going to cast a wide net. I just hope they get someone forward thinking, but isn't going to overthink or overmanage on game day.

I liked Espada when he was here years ago.

I'm not sure if you guys have been following Jazz Chisholm's work he's been doing for the playoffs so far. He did a segment on MLBTV with Mark DeRosa. I retweeted it with the description of "Jazz talking to his next manager", and Chisholm liked the tweet. So I guess we know which of the rumored candidates is the early leader in the clubhouse for Jazz.

Have not but I saw Barry Jackson or some other local writer say DeRosa was a finalist for job in 2015(!), so the former admin thought he was an interesting candidate.

I think I'd want someone with experience personally, but DeRosa as the bench coach seems like a good cultural improvement and that's a big step up for him if he is looking to get into coaching.

Wouldn't that be something if Kim stakes her career on a 1st time manager.

FWIW, Mish has said he thinks it’ll be a 1st time manager. Not necessarily someone with no coaching experience, though.

ive seen some rumors of joe maddon and as much as i find him kind of obnoxious and annoying i wouldnt mind him. He would at least be a guy who has taken a low payroll team and managed the sum to be greater than their parts. We would finally start implementing smarter platoons which i think we will need to do with guys like jesus sanchez and burdick and others. I doubt he gets the job but id like an outside the box thinker and not the traditional baseball manager like mattingly was.

I like Maddon. He'd probably be the safest candidate despite how bad things went with the Angels. My only worry with him is the Marlins seem to think they can be the Rays where they don't spend money, and develop their players. The problem is that's incredibly rare, and they've done a poor job developing players, so that's a pretty dumb idea. I fear that they could look at hiring Maddon because he managed that team to success, and use that as a reason to go for it with that model.

the angels are a clusterfuck possibly even worse than we are given they have 2 generational talents and a boatload of money every year and still suck. As far as emulating the rays, thats what they should be doing given bruce wont spend, but they need to do it better. They have done it with the pitching, they have just failed in every way possible with every hitter outside of jazz for 5 straight years. The thought process is fine, the execution and eagerness to pull the trigger on big moves needs to be there though. The rays develop pitching and hitting and IFA prospects at an unbelievably high clip for a small market team, we need to be doing whatever they are from a draft and development standpoint, at least as far as hitters are concerned.

I’d much rather have Maddon than a first time manager. Of course we could get lucky with an outside-the-box first time manager as well but we could also end up with a Batting Average and RBI’s guy, too.

I guess it's fine to want to be the Rays, but it's foolhardy to expect to do it, and make it your business model. That would be like someone who's 5-3 saying they're going to be in the NBA because Muggsy Bougues did it. The Rays are the exception to the rule. No other small market franchise has had that kind of sustained success. You have to essentially be perfect in adding talent through the draft and IFA, and develop those guys, and they're just too much of a crapshoot to expect to be able to do that. There's also no reason to believe anyone in the front office or the instructional staff is capable of that, at least from the hitting side.
