South Florida media hates Hanley
Three Things to consider on this sports Thursday:
Thing 1: Here’s an idea: If the Marlins sign free-agent shortstop Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez balks at moving to third base, why not offer Hanley to the Mets for third baseman David Wright?
The Mets are reportedly willing to listen to offers for their franchise player, who is under contract for an average of $15.5 million the next two seasons (including a club option for 2013). Hanley, a year younger than Wright, is due the same annual average over the next three years.
Both players are coming off injury-plagued down years. Both could probably use a change of scenery. Both have disappointed ownership to varying degrees. And Wright, for all his problems hitting at Citi Field, remains a formidable threat in road ballparks.
Plus, in Wright, the Marlins would be getting a five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner who (if healthy) plays the hot corner as well as anyone in the game. Hanley would be a work in progress over there, even if his heart were in the move, and he wouldn’t have infield guru Perry Hill (who retired) to help speed the transition.
The more I think about this, the more sense it makes. In essence, the Marlins could swap their mercurial shortstop for the entire left side of the Mets infield, and you know they think highly of Wright. Back during the height of Dontrelle Willis’ powers, the Marlins reportedly offered him straight up to the Mets for Wright.
And remember that interview Bill James did with “60 Minutes” back in 2008? Asked to name the one player in baseball he would choose to start a franchise, the Red Sox consultant didn’t name Albert Pujols or Alex Rodriguez. He chose Wright.
