Right, but I can't imagine MLB getting pissed if the Marlins pay all of Ross' contract to someone in a trade. Team is still spending the same money (or having to return revenue sharing proceeds), and honestly, MLB cannot constrain the front office if they want to make a "baseball decision" if the money is the same.

    • Don't disagree that if the point is spend the revenue sharing, it's irrelevant how it's spent, just so long as it's spent.

However, the issue isn't whether it helps us go from that "B" prospect to an "A" prospect, the issue, at least as Carroll frames it, is if we are begrudgingly turned into a buyer.

If it is the latter, that is bullshit.

        • They could trade Ross or Cantu or whoever, and take back a bad contract along with the prospect from their trade partner. Taking back the bad contract would probably net them a better prospect, since they're relieving their trade partner of salary.

What would be the point of making the trade if they get a bad contract in return? I would see this FO holding on to Ross and Cantu or whoever rather than make such a deal.

            • what about trading for Brett Myers or adding another bat.

              • I'm surprised you don't hate Brett Myers.

As for a bat, where's it going? I guess RF but who knows what they are doing with Stanton right now

                • Wouldn't hurt to go get a catcher either.

We'd do it to get a better package back for cody/cantu (If we're forced to have payroll stay static, I mean)

                      • I asked Will Carroll if it meant they'd have to take on salary specifically because of the MLBPA agreement:

@SoFlaMarlins What it SOUNDED like. Not sure if true.

                        • Can't be true, MLB can't do that. If the Marlins came to an agreement to keep salary at a threshold, I can understand the marlins being forced to pick up "Codys" salary if he is moved, but they cannot force the team to take back payroll. Only penalize with keeping their current obligations, or deny revenue sharing. I dont think this is an issue.

But it does bring up the point, if the Marlins are on the hook for Cody's salary, he becomes much more attractive to another team since they won't have to pay him except for the minimum. I understand the Marlins saying to everyone, "look we're paying for him here or there. We have his rights next year. We will keep him unless you give us "high" trade value. Don't try to bully us mother fucker, we hold the cards."

We'll see next 2 weeks. Maybe they win 10 in a row. (joke).

While they would take back a bad contract, they'd get a better player back in return along with the bad contract because the other team wouldn't be taking on salary. Other teams also look favorably on acquiring players while not having to add any payroll. If the Marlins tell a team "hey, you're getting Cody Ross but your payroll is staying the same," Cody's more a more attractive trade piece than if the Marlins tell the other team "hey, you're getting Cody Ross, but you have to pay his entire salary." Same thing with Cantu.

It would be like: Ross for super duper prospect + guy with contract equal to or greater than Cody's. It wouldn't just be Cody for a guy with a shitty contract.

If what Carroll's saying is true, it does make me wonder whether MLB is going to tell the Marlins they have to increase payroll next year, and that it can't decrease or remain static. And not just a marginal increase with inflation/increased revenue from increased amounts received in revenue sharing, like a real increase because the stadium is opening and such.

                              • Brandon Inge is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal on his left hand.
In other words, he broke his left pinkie finger. It's obviously a tough blow for the second-place Tigers. Short of moving Carlos Guillen to third base and promoting Scott Sizemore to play second, the Tigers could now be looking for an infielder at the trade deadline. Calling up Jeff Larish from the minor leagues is also a possibility.

This could be potentially good news for us.
