Having an argument with a friend who is telling me Uggla is the worst 2B NL defender. I know my friend is wrong but is Uggla still pretty much an average defender (I saw bobob's post on 07/06 but was curious is he's still pretty much the same).

Based on UZR/150, he's 2nd to last in the NL behind Shumaker.

Just tell your friend he has the highest wOBA among NL second basemen, and he'll shut up.

He's probably closer to bad than good at 2b, I'll have to check. He seems like he's not too far off what most people's eyes tell them: fine until he stops hitting 30 HRs.

            • The Marlins have begun talks with Dan Uggla on a contract extension, but the sides are far apart. The Marlins appear willing to pay in the three-year, $30 million range -- less than Uggla's agent wants. Uggla can be a free agent after 2011. Florida plans to discuss a multiyear deal with Ricky Nolasco, who can be a free agent after 2012.

                      Marlins, Uggla discussing extension
Club's all-time home run leader enjoying best season

                      By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

                      08/13/10 5:19 PM ET

MIAMI -- A couple weeks ago, Dan Uggla established himself as the Marlins' all-time home run leader.

It appears the slugger will have a few more seasons to pad his numbers with the organization.

The Marlins are in discussions with agent Terry Bross of Gaylord Sports Managment regarding a multiyear contract for the two-time All-Star second baseman.

The team approached Bross the week after the All-Star Game, when the Marlins were playing the Rockies in Miami, and the agent said on Friday that talks were "preliminary."

"I'm not sure where it's going to go," Bross said.

Bross was in Cincinnati, where the Marlins are playing the Reds for three games, and was expected to have further discussions with Marlins general manager Michael Hill.

Bross did not go into parameters of the contract, but discussions are believed to revolve around a three-year deal. Per team policy, the Marlins do not comment on negotiations.

Currently in his second year of arbitration, Uggla is making $7.8 million, which is the highest contract for any Marlins player this season. If he remains unsigned, 2011 would be the final year he is arbitration-eligible before he would have the required MLB service time to pursue free agency.

The Marlins have plans to keep Uggla for at least three more seasons, meaning he would remain a fixture next to three-time All-Star Hanley Ramirez.

Uggla is in the midst of his best season, batting .284 with 26 home runs and 72 RBIs.

On July 31 at San Diego, he connected on his 144th home run with the Marlins, making him the club's all-time leader, as he surpassed Mike Lowell's 143.

Heading into the weekend series, Uggla has 147 career home runs. Twice he has been an All-Star -- 2006 and '08.

Uggla is in strong position to win his first Silver Slugger Award for a National League second baseman.

A Rule 5 Draft pick out of Arizona's system in 2005, Uggla is the only Marlins player to post three straight 30-homer seasons. He is on his way to making that string four in a row.

No second baseman has hit more home runs since 2006 than Uggla.

A subject of possible trade talks for more than a year, Uggla has entrenched himself with the Marlins, who regard him as a valuable leader and a building block player.

The Marlins currently have Ramirez (six years, $70 million) and Josh Johnson (four years, $39 million) locked up to multi-year contracts. If Uggla joins them, the club will have three centerpiece veterans under contract by the time they move into their new, retractable-roof stadium in 2012.

The Marlins also are exploring signing pitcher Ricky Nolasco to a multi-year contract. Like Uggla, Nolasco is in his second arbitration year.

                        NOT SO UGGLA

Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla wants a five-year contract extension, major-league sources say, and his financial target is believed to be in the $55 million to $60 range.

I know what you’re thinking: WHAT?

Uggla’s more highly regarded double-play partner, shortstop Hanley Ramirez, “only” received a six-year, $70 million deal from the Marlins. But the two situations are not comparable due to differences in service time.

Ramirez’s deal covers his three arbitration and first three free-agent years. A five-year extension for Uggla would cover his final year of arbitration and four free-agent years.

Uggla, 30, is a below-average defender, compromising his value. But here’s something you probably don’t know: His 149 career homers are the most ever by a second baseman in his first five seasons.

In an era of diminished power, what is that worth?

Uggla’s home-run total ranks 17th all-time among all players in their first five seasons (Ralph Kaline was first with 215; Albert Pujols second with 201).

At his current pace, Uggla would finish the season with 158 homers, tied with Adam Dunn and Roger Maris for 11th on that list — and just two behind Prince Fielder.

I'd rather trade him than give him 5 years and $60 million.

word. Good thing is that he's having such a good season it's a win-win either way. He goes you should be able to get very good value and if he stays your able to keep that bat.
