    Monteverde

Late blooming TJS survivor. Best ERA among all starters in the system last season. Soft tossing lefty who struck out 11 in six innings with a single hit and walk. Outshined Perez and Fulton vs same competition to start the season.

probably because he is 6 years older than eury and 4 years older than fulton and hes playing against competition that is 2-3 years younger than him. Maybe he can become a long reliever in the future like castano

berry just feels so much like colin moran to me. maybe his bat will take off, but it just feels like a mediocre bat with no defensive position. might hang around in the big leagues for a few years but is nothing special.

burdick has gotten off to a crazy weird start. Hitting the shit out of the ball with 4 hr's and 3 2b's in 35 ab's, but also a 15/1 k/bb ratio early. That wont play at the ml level. he needs to cut down the strikeouts.

although he got hurt, watson got off to a good start. hopefully he can have a bounceback year.

Yes, all pitchers and players in general get better and better with age. Johnny Cueto is really old. He ought to be great this season because he is playing against much younger players.

Seriously, Monteverde, who is ranked as the 30th best prospect in the organization by MLB Pipeline, could find his way into the Marlins rotation this month. I'd love to see it.

there is quite literally 0 chance of monteverde getting to the big leagues this year outside of a september call up for him to get lit up. The fact that you still cant comprehend the fact that stats will be skewed when guys in the minors are playing against people 4-5 years younger than him is mind boggling. It's another ben meyer situation just waiting to make you look like a fool. Monteverde is the 30th ranked player in a bad marlins system overall.

Kind of like when ben meyer was the next top pitcher for the marlins off of a year in A and A+ ball where he was 24 going against 19 and 20 year olds. It makes a difference. Not every prospect's stats are taken equally. Situation and age relative to competition is one of the biggest things to look into and you refuse to even acknowledge it's existence. I'm sure you thought it was no big deal when danny almonte was fucking lighting up kids younger than him in the little league world series.

                Literally a zero chance?

Do we have to negate Lee's crazy with crazy that goes on the opposite end of him? Monteverde was drafted in 2021 and has made 7 starts in AA by April 2023, that's pretty good. I'm not going to punish a guy for being drafted older. Especially with Covid circumstances. He's a decent prospect who will most likely at least get a look in the majors in the near future.

Yes a 0 percent chance Monteverde comes up and you want to know why - they don't have to protect him on the 40 man roster this offseason. It's also why Fulton is close to a -0- coming up this year. One exception - they are actually contending and they absolutely need them. I find this extremely unlikely based on what is front of them on the depth chart, and what they would likely trade for, so it's effectively a 0.

I'd rank the SP right now - Sandy, Luzardo, Rogers, Cueto, Cabrera, Garrett, Smeltzer, Castano, Hoeing, and Lindgren, and Eury and Eder may pop in before Cabrera or after Garrett starting in mid-June if they are healthy and performing well. And if you want to argue if everyone gets really hurt why not try Monteverde, well the season is over at that point anyways so why burn the 40 man spot on him (the Marlins will have a pretty full 40 man of interesting guys to note) and just try out all the older (in service time) guys and see if you get a Castano miracle.

I am hopeful Monteverde turns into a solid prospect, and we should be encouraged, but we really need to stop the dramatics of thinking guys like Nunez and Monteverde are just going to jump effectively 2 levels as rookies and turn into MLB contributors. It's not how it works unless you are Jose Fernandez.

We have to negate both. The guy is fine as a potential RP prospect. Nothing more to discuss here.

That being said to switch gears - I noticed Palacios (who I know we both have been mildly enamored with here and there) is in AAA. They just outright skipped AA with him. I'm not sure if this is just a short term depth move or if they are just throwing him to the fire as another soft tossing lefty and seeing if he just sticks. He'll be interesting to track and see if that BB rate holds up. On a larger organizational picture, I feel the aggressive promotion is to effectively start "clearing out" these FV 40/35+ guys OOO this year as we all know what is coming in 2024 and these guys have no future here unless they are good this year.So I guess that goes back to Monteverde, no chance this year. They are going to pitch all these guys like Palacios, Hoeing, Lindgren, Castano, etc. into the ground and see if they have anything as a totally brutal 40 man pitching depth chart is coming this offseason.

he was drafted in the 8th round, which isnt all that high to begin with. Secondly, he was drafted that high because we drafted mack and watson and had to go way above slot value to sign them, so that's why they drafted him that high. it was to avoid paying him a big bonus. For that year, he was our 9th highest pick, and our 18th highest bonus given out out of 20 picks that signed. He's a nothing prospect. He might become a castano AAAA pitcher or long reliever at some point, but he's beating up on younger talent. It's all he can do because that's what he's being asked to do, but that doesnt make him anywhere near an MLB player. He's 25 years old, starting 7 games in AAA at 25 is not impressive. If he can start putting up some numbers against legitimate talent in AAA, then we can talk. But he wont be on the mlb roster at any point this year other than to get knocked around in a meaningless september game.

Nothing wrong with having the career Castano has and will have. Average age of AA pitcher last year was 24.6, so he's right there. Lee suggesting he'll be up within a month and you saying there is zero chance he'll be in the majors by the end of the year are equally ridiculous statements. (and yeah I saw you edited your statement)

eh, I am out on many fish16 black/white hard takes, but he's right here IMO.

See above - it's the service time. I get dinged a lot around here for bringing it up, but they are extremely conscious about it and they have a 40 man glut coming. It's so microscopic a chance Monteverde gets into the top 13 arms on this team this year, it's a 0 to me.

it's not ridiculous. Here are the list of guys he would be behind on the SP depth chart this year- Sandy, Luzardo, Cabrera, Rogers, Cueto, Garrett, Eury, Hoeing, Eder, Castano, Smeltzer, Lindgren,

On the reliever side, it's Puk, Floro, Barnes, Chargois, Scott, Okert, Enright, Brazoban, Lindgren, Nardi, Nance, Garrett, Smeltzer, Castano, and then they would use guys on the 40 man first like Reynolds, Simpson, Soriano, eventually sixto if he is ever healthy, and then the guy they just DFA'd who will stick around in Villalobos.

He's nowhere near the majors in terms of our depth chart. Also, the average age might be 24.6, but the actual talent in that league is younger than him. The guys who are around his age are guys who, like him, are fringe prospects/non prospects.
