Monteverde has quickly made a name for himself with a four-start stretch that's about as good as you'll ever see, not just in terms of preventing runs but also missing bats, his 13.2 K/9 rate backed up by a 16 percent swinging-strike rate. All four of his starts have gone at least six innings, and he allowed just one hit in the first two. What's interesting is he throws right around 90 mph, which makes for an unconventional prospect. The 25-year-old may be just the latest in a long line of tricky left-handers who thrive on pure deception. https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/ba...andrew-abbott/

Given the dude is 25 in AA (Elder is 23 BTW), I am just saying there is a valid question of whether this is an older prospect control specialist beating up on AA hitters versus is this a true breakout. I want it to be so, I am just tempering expectations here that absent a second really good pitch, and frankly a decent third one, it may track closer to Smeltzer than Garrett for what our expectations should be.

Hoeing was also pretty OK his last start so maybe he is a fine replacement guy for 4+ innings before the third time lineup changeover. Seems like they should throw a lefty opener with him.

Amidst all the hype of a Perez start in Miami, the fact is lost that Monteverde has been better than Eury against the same competition and with the same sticky ball ... better by every statistical measure.
Good luck to Eury and to Patick when the opportunity comes along, which is likely very soon.Last edited by Lee Stone; 05-11-2023, 07:04 AM.

In fact he did have better results. in 2019, in 5 starts in AA at an even younger age, he had 5 starts in AA, 33 k's, 3 walks, a .60 ERA and a .35 WHIP. Because, again, as you refuse to acknowledge time and time again, age relative to competition matters, as does how those stats are accumulated (velocity vs know how and deception). Not everything is repeatable at the major league level when the competition is the best in the world.Last edited by fish16; 05-11-2023, 07:46 AM.

So, the Southern League leader in ERA, WHIP, K's. BAA, and basically everything is not an "actual" prospect. Good to know.
And Jake Eder's AA stats when he returns from his own injuries will be meaningless because he's too old for the league?Last edited by Lee Stone; 05-11-2023, 08:26 AM.

eder throws (or threw) high 90s when he last pitched, so again, what you’re not getting, and it is the reason he is an actual prospect as opposed to monteverde who is just a fringe prospect, is that velocity dominates the major league level. Look at the average velocities of the best pitchers in baseball. It’s not impossible for him to be successful throwing 90, but it’s highly unlikely
