Lee you can't just say Evidence and then your evidence is an opinion.

It's baseball we're talking about. There is nothing but opinions. All Stars are determined by opinions of fans and managers. Hall of Famers are selected based upon baseball writer opinions. Players are drafted or signed or traded solely on the basis of opinions. Speaking of which, Monteverde could easily land the Marlins a top 100 prospect in a trade right now - but I'd hold on to him.

No franchise in baseball is trading the Marlins a FV50 prospect for Garrett, let alone Monteverde. That is trading for Eder, Cappe, or effectively Meyer.

He might get a FV40 ranking in FG and BA (MLB pipeline is always generous) as a future Petit/Smeltzer kind of guy. But but but, let's see if there is a velocity uptick and/or slider is playing up and maybe that tracks closer to a Garrett. I'm not rushing to judgment here. I am saying, this is fun and encouraging but we see this story often and it usually ends with Meyer, Velez, and Yamamoto versus a true breakout performance. Petit/Smeltzer is probably a great result, but of course we all want another Garrett. I am genuinely extremely interested on a "stuff" scouting report but I am not holding my breath.

And just so we're all on the same page, I think Nasim is showing more "breakout" potential as somehow, that BB rate has not evaporated at AA and we're closing it on 250 PA, the K rate has decreased from A+, and the slugging is going up even if just incrementally. He's also 22 so while he has a small frame, there is room to grow here. He's much more exciting than Monteverde IMO, and he's not getting a FV50 prospect from anyone in baseball.

          • Tonight the Marlins face ace Spencer Strider, Atlanta's 24th ranked prospect in 2021. After throwing just 84 innings of A to AA ball with a 3.73 ERA, he dominated as a major leaguer in 2022 and thus far in 2023. He was a fourth-rounder out of Clemson. See, this stuff does happen. Monteverde certainly seems like a candidate to be a stud like Strider SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. So does Eder eventually.

Strider throws 97+ MPH average, top 94th percentile in MLB - https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savan...r-pitching-mlb. In no world is Monteverde a candidate to be a stud like Strider at any time. Eder, I can buy. He has the gas to be excellent.

Which is why you bet on those guys and why a guy like Strider - and Sandy Alcantara - who are pedestrian in your eyes in the minors are monumentally better players once they start hitting their peaks.

              • I think there is a lot more to pitching than velocity.

Strider has an 80 fastball. An 80! Eury has a 60/70. Sandy had a 65. And they have secondary pitches. It's not just velocity here, but that helps when the ball also moves.

Monteverde's best pitch is a 55 changeup with a 40 fastball. Banging the pots and pans - where is the velocity jump or slider progress?

What are we missing here? Monteverde is going to smoke and mirrors major league hitters and just became Greg Maddux/Jamie Moyer? Strider is a unicorn arm that put it together. Monteverde's ceiling is probably Garrett developmentally absent a real real uptick.

                  • Showing my age, but Glavine is my comp for Monteverde.

                      • Ben Meyer was dominating A-Ball. High-A to AA is the biggest jump in the minors. Monteverde is doing this at AA. Lee’s comparisons are ridiculous and over the top. (Gallen/Glavine) but I think there’s something there.

Hopefully because they will have to trade off arms for bats (obviously), and all of a sudden they may have a pitching staff of lefties all MLB ready next year:

                          Luzardo, Rogers, Eder, Fulton, Smeltzer
                          Puk, Scott, Okert, Nardi
                          Castano, Simpson, Monteverde, Palacios/King

That was a fun exercise. They also have a staff of righties effectively MLB next year.

                          Sandy, Cabrera, Cueto, Eury, Meyer
                          Floro, Chargois, Barnes, Bender, Brazoban
                          Soriano, Enright, Reynolds (+ Nance)

They probably won't have to protect Fulton and Monteverde as the won't be called up this year, so they'll only have to jettison 4-5 of these guys which is great. I imagine Floro, Scott, and Barnes will be trades to lower payroll so they'll have a lot of flexibility to keep everyone else.

                          • The opportunity to trade pitching for first rate upgrades to the lineup has faded quickly. Sandy, the asset that could have nabbed three assets in the vein of Cartaya, Bush. Vargas and Outman from the Dodgers IMO, has seen his trade value plummet. Cabrera, Luzardo, Rogers have question marks. Hard to see an advantageous position for Marlins.

                            • Sandy should just retire.
