When X Edwards got only two hits for JAX yesterday, it broke a string of six straight games WITH THREE OR MORE HITS! Edwards leads all of AAA in BA (now that Dane Myers has joined the Marlins roster).

I was really excited to see Virginia catcher Ryan Teel still available at 10 for the Marlins. He's got the Realmuto sort of package and hit like Adley Rutshmann last season. I don't understand why they passed on him.

Also, I suspect they would have taken Teel if they knew they were getting White. But it's hard to blame them not seeing into the future. White was ranked 24/27/24 on MLB, FG, and Sporting News pre-draft rankings (not in top 30 on CBS or Fox) so to get him 10 picks later is unexpected I imagine.

MLB had Teel 7 and Meyer 8, FG Teel 11 and Meyer 12, Sporting news Teel 8, Meyer 18, Fox Teel 10, Meyer 15 and CBS had Teel 7 and Meyer 16 . Generally seems like Teel is a little more regarded here, but it is splitting hairs in this range of the draft IMO and maybe they really wanted to make sure they got an upper tier pitcher. They are probably equal value which is all we can hope for. Now have to hope for results.

A lot to complain about but the analysts love their draft so not sure this one is it.

Not quite splitting hairs. The Marlins have close to no legitimate catching prospects in their system. It's the toughest position to fill with an offensive contributor. Teel would have filled a real need.

To an extent the draft is need based, but it is frankly just talent acquisition and things play out. Maybe they are going to work Aldermann hard as a catcher? Maybe there is reluctancy to spend big on a catcher with impending robo-umps coming which eliminates value on framing? So a guy like Aldermann who can block, catch, throw, and hit dingers is all that is needed? That is Mack's profile also BTW, so the Marlins are doing something with these picks. Also, Banfield and McIntosh are slugging big time this year, R. Hernandez's slash looks good on the complex even if he is 3+ years away, and yea Mack is scuffling, but he's also 20 in high-A, off an injury, and he is a cold weather guy from New York and those guys are usually late bloomers as they can't play as much in the winter (it is a real thing with late blooming cold weather players). It's hard to write off Mack for years. There is also Allen but who knows what he is about but maybe he can hit RHP.

They absolutely could use a guy like Teel don't get me wrong (but this goes for any potential starting position player type), but they got an arm rated around him and can absolutely find a catcher before summer 2025 when presumably Teel would be ready at the earliest and that is optimistic. This isn't a Skipworth situation where you knew it wasn't going to out when it happened. They did fine here per the draft value (which is important), but we'll see what the results yield as that too is important.

Edwards has been on a tear in July. Acquired in trade from the Rays, it seems as if he may be making his case to be up full time for the Marlins. In July he is hitting .538 with 10 runs batted in and a homer, this is in 39 ABs. While impressive as that is he also stole 7 bases!! He is one player to keep an eye on especially if your in need of steals, now having 20 on the season! (@stoffer81)

Arraez has a babip of .398 and can't leg out IF hits like Edwards can.

I'm not sure the 3B would work for Myers. They need him in the OF regardless of Segura.

By all means try it, but this is A LOT of faith in two ascending prospects. But if they can do it and not have to trade pitching that would be beyond awesome.

That being said, don't you just want a bigger stick versus one of them anyways? They can hide Segura in September with expanded rosters and not include him on playoff roster BTW, so I think his larger phase out would be September 1st when presumably Jazz is back and they have another hitter. But they can certainly bench him 50% of the time now to try this out.

johnston is quickly becoming an option for next year. Reminds me way too much of Canha's rise in our system. He is hitting everywhere he goes. he deserves a shot next year.

Kemp Alderman had a terrible start to his pro career in Jupiter. (When have we heard that before?) Absolutely killed it in the FSL playoffs though. Interesting to see how he does next year, probably going to another pitcher's paradise in Beloit.
