I don't think they need to be a playoff team next year, but I think showing improvement is important (something closer to 80 wins than 60). I also think they need to sign a free agent or 2 (Not necessarily Rendon, although that would be great....maybe a Castellanos/Abreu type and perhaps a bullpen arm or 2) in the off season to show they are willing to spend. Next year is an important year with the TV deal expiring. Show a commitment and that things are about to turn around and I think more fan support will start come.

Agreed. I would shoot for Rendon on an overpay like lou has said and if u miss get Castellanos for 3/40 and 2 arms(1 RP and SP or 2 RP)

O they are gonna spend(wanna be around 80-100 million in future) No NOT saying they are gonna be at 100 million but the 80-100 is where they are cool with

They want to be in #3-10 Pick range which means they expect improvement but they don't think will be over .500 till 2021 at earliest. They got core guys they want to be in ML 2020 which is where they wanted to be. Diaz/Harrison/Lewin/Jesus/Jazz/Neidert/Sixto/RP

Who is saying this? I haven't seen 2020 playoffs mentioned once here.

        • Please for the love of god no castellanos unless the deal is a bargain. Giving a middling OF who is awful defensively a 3 year 40 million deal would be horrendous use of resources. I’d hate that even more than giving didi gregorious a big long term deal

This to me is the bottom line for this offseason. For a rebuilding team the middle tier of free agency is both a poor use of resources and not going to move the needle significantly. Focus on getting top tier talent and then try to take a few swings at bargain leve guys and bullpen arms that you can flip like the dodgers got with muncy 2 years ago or like we did with Romo this year

Castellanos is a super safe 2+ WAR player, with 4+ WAR upside in his bat, considering his hit tool which is fantastic. He's also not "terrible" defensively in RF this season so maybe there is some hope there for being only below average and not completely horrendous. He's a good player, and I don't think it's fair to call him a middling OF. Castellanos can really really hit and is right handed which is good for their needs right now. Castellanos is a steal and bargain at 3/$40. You do that in a second. I'm just saying this to put it in perspective.

I am all in on Rendon as I've been on that diatribe for months, but Castellanos and eventually trading some OF depth for CF/SP/C/Right handed 2B/SS help, could make sense depending on the contract values and other trade assets. Rendon (and Cole) are the best ideas as they need an alpha-producer, but I'm not going to be mad if they sign Castellanos or Ozuna to a 4-5 year deal with a reasonable value, and just trickle down a future OF trade. That is not "horrendous" and just saying, let's be a little less dramatic here?

Also, they could theoretically sign Rendon AND Castellanos (not keeping Urena and Conley only, but they keep Rojas), payroll is still ONLY $80 millionish, trade J. Sanchez or Bleday immediately for a CF/SP/C, and that team looks really good. I suspect the Dodgers can deal Ruiz now with Will Smith being the greatest of all time, and I bet a non-40 man roster Bleday gets them interested very fast if the Marlins chuck in a good second player. Just saying. Things like this open options, and the Marlins have a lot of paths to getting better.

                • Maybe middling is a little strong for castellanos, but the point remains that I don’t think signing a merely above average OF is a good use of resources at this point in the rebuild. I’d go all in for the star level talent, take a year to evaluate the OF prospects we have and sign a 1 year stop gap and then if need be sign an OF to a longer term deal after next year. We have too many potential options long term with legitimate potential to invest that kind of money on someone like castellanos. I’d stick to top level starters and infielders

I am not saying offer Castellanos 6/100+ but at 3/40 or 45 its a great get. RF/1B with NO draft pick attachment

The thing thats funny is people want to spend cash but only for certain players. If we sign 3/4 vets to 1 year contracts then everyone will cry that they should have a higher payroll

                    I shoot for(in order)

                    Rendon
                    Ozuna
                    Castellanos

                    and 2 pitchers(1 or 2 RP)

Other teams will offer that too without the awful reputation.

                            Offer more.

Also, that reputation is Loria's reputation. Hopefully players will realize that, and hopefully they'll also realize who wouldn't want to play in Miami with awesome Florida tax breaks?

Is it a great get? It’s the position we have a ton of depth at and he’s not some savior piece, he’s a Brian Anderson type nice player to have but not a star, plus he comes with the limitations defensively. As a 1b, maybe, but as an outfielder signing him to 10+ million for multiple years given how far from contention we are and how much outfield depth we have in the system coming in the next few years, this seems like a poor use of long term money. Either spend big on a star or continue to sign 1 year guys like Romo or granderson and try to flip them at the deadline for a long term piece and then try again for more stars next offseason or wait another year to try to fill in “final pieces.” For a team like the cubs he makes a lot of sense because they are close to contention but for a team as far away as the marlins and with as much outfield depth as we have coming up in the next few years, especially in the corner outfield spots, just use that money for 1-2 year deals and try to flip those guys for more prospects

It’s not a good reputation for this front office either. Every great player they inherited asked to be traded.
