Urena isn't going to break the bank in arbitration, I don't think he will impact anything they want to do. He'll get tendered if healthy. They can also do the Straily with him, and cut him in August for a fraction of the tender.

It's just a little annoying because he probably has max value to a contender in season as who really strives for a 5th SP in December, but this also falls into "it doesn't really matter though because who they would get isn't going to be a franchise changer and still has 2 years of control so he isn't changing much value wise."

        • Gotta think Berti or someone gets DFA and Gallen gets call sooner. Weird about Urena

I mean that's true and that was stupid, but the money situation is significantly more favorably next year. $32 million is off the books with Prado, Castro, Romo, Walker, and Granderson.

They are rolling into next year with 20 guys on the roster and it'll be under $40 million. That includes Chen getting at least $16 of that and he may not be included in those 20 guys really showing how clean the books are.

              • so do we just go with a 6 man rotation and just let these guys all get a shot with a rotation of Alcantara, Richards, Lopez, Yamamoto, Gallen, and Elieser, and then Smith replaces one of the last 3 when he's ready? I hadnt looked at gallen's stats in a few weeks and man he really is having an incredible year in every single aspect. Im ready to see him if the contract ramifications are now past us.

Yes, but not with Yamamoto. Send him back to the minors for now.

The other 6, no problem. Let them sort it out for a few months and see how innings look in August.

Gallen can be called up. He won’t be a super 2 at this point.

                    • Trevor Richards xFIP: 5.22

He’s Adam Conley but not as good.

Urena had a 5+ FIP his first 300+ innings and then "broke out" in 2018 to a stable looking lower 4 era SP. Richards is at career 204 IP.

I think you owe it to yourself to give him another 25+ starts and see if something clicks (unless he just gets absolutely repeatedly bombed of course). He can probably get close to that amount of starts by the Super 2 deadline next year which is the line in the sand for me as that's when the 2020 AAA/AA depth (see below) is going to start really pushing out guys all over. This really goes for all of them at the MLB level as they all have earned the innings. I don't think there is a crunch, yet.

MLB 2019 ROS - They can go to a 6 man with Caleb, Sandy, Pablo, Gallen, Richards, and E. Hernandez, or mix/match them with injuries/off days and skip some starts here and there. They've all earned it. Everyone else can stay in the minors. Yamamoto can be an injury replacement 7th SP, and Noesi a desperation 8th. Maybe Urena even comes back for September? I think this is fine and is a good mix of current production/eye to the future.

                        Pre Super 2 Deadline 2020:

MLB - Same 6 above - Caleb, Sandy, Pablo, Gallen, Richards, and E. Hernandez. Let'em rip and tell them to hold off the sheer devastation in AAA/AA. Urena gets traded.

AAA - Neidert, Yamamoto, Dugger, Beggs, Poteet - I can buy a Beggs conversion to the bullpen and moving up one of the 5 below (i.e. Sixto), but his BABIP is high and showed a lot of promise in 2018. Poteet seems like a guy to just pitch in 2019 for awhile and hope it clicks.

AA - Sixto, Guzman (even if they both dominate, I think they should open here for 1-2 months. There isn't a rush and they can immediately jump them over the 5 above if they shine), E. Cabrera, B. Garrett, T. Rogers (I'd move him up as he could be a quick bullpen conversion) - WHAT A PROSPECT STAFF ON PAPER!!!!!!!!!!!!

A+ - Holloway (clear repeat with the BB rate for me. No worries as they can turn him into a AA RP quick), W, Stewart, and a super interesting threesome of Vallimont, Mejia, and G. Soriano

When you get to this time next year, you can reshuffle that fast depending on performance/injuries. It's pretty insane this is a 4 level depth chart of very respectable arms. That's 21 guys, plus another dozen RP arms like Anderson, Steckenrider, Garcia, Quijada, etc. They can have a 66% flameout/injury rate and have a staff.

Next summer is going to be fun.

                        • if im the marlins im taking a chance and seeing if cody allen is willing to sign here after the angels end up letting him go. we could use bullpen help and he would be a good buy low signing to see if we can turn him around

The best I can come up with is, I believe in about 10 days they can call up Brinson and it deflects a year of service time (i.e., he will end this season with 1.171 days). Not that I think anyone expects him to be good at this point where they strategically need that year in 5 years, but they might as well keep him down a few extra days to get the year if he does work out.

At that point, if you're going to play a .622 OPS outfielder, it might as well be Brinson.

In his defense, Brinson is hitting .294/.380/.503 (.391 BABIP), 6 HR, 9.2% BB, 27.6% K in AAA. At least the BB rate is back. Maybe you just keep him down until September to really drill it into his head to stop swinging at everything.
