Smith has 4 more years of control after this one. He's potentially a #2 starter. In theory, he should still be cheap in 2 years when the team is starting to be competitive.
At some point you have to start keeping good players and not just flip them for prospects. We have the #4 pick in the draft this year and likely a top 3 pick next year. Load up there with hitters early in the draft. Sign free agent bats in the off-season...but start holding on to good, young, controllable players.

Jeter unhappy with Marlins' play, attendance woes
I am shocked that he is shocked. Who knew jumping at the first offer for Yelich and getting a bunch of guys who were widly known to have pretty serious issues offensively and trading Ozuna for a reliever, 5th outfielder, and AAAA arm just so you could get their money off the books and taking a lesser package for Stanton because you wouldn't eat any money would not be well received?Amy Adams, AKA Cinnamon MuffLogan Morrison: "If baseball didn't exist, I would probably be ... like a curler.
