Very impressed with Alcantara. Really nice opening games for the kids against a good offense.

          Richards, Lopez, and Alcantara last 3 starts combined 19.1 IP, 13 H, 17 K, 2 BB, only 4 ER.

I think it's pretty well known (I think either Mish or Samson said it) that Loria made that deal. The front office was apparently blindsided by the fact that they had just acquired Rodney.

In Hill's defense, he did turn David Phelps into Pablo Lopez...and he (or his baseball staff) found Trevor Richards.

Sure would have been nice to also have Paddack and Luis Castillo in this rotation as well though.

Here is what the assistant gm said then "We've been in discussions with the Padres for the better part of a week," Marlins assistant general manager Mike Berger said. "It all came to fruition today. In our opinion, it strengthened a strength.“

Been in talks for over a week. I doubt he was blindsided.

I mean, what else was he going to say publicly? It’s not like he wasn’t going to bash a trade that the guy paying his salary made after if was done. Loria wasn’t going to talk to the press. It was kind of his job to sell it at that point.

Also, the new ownership basically paid Berger to go away...so I guess make of that what you will.

Only one out in the division. Striking distance! .5 game out of the wild card. In the hunt

Just seeing how hot yelich has been. Wish we could have seen what the rebuild would have looked like if we stopped after Ozuna, Stanton, and Dee and built aroun Yelich and JT. Would have required JT re-signing but with this pitching and those 2 anchoring the lineup this team could have been legitimately good. Couldnt have seen that coming though with Smith, Richards, Lopez, and others improving though. Hell add in Jose not dying and us keeping Paddack for a useless Rodney in a move we all knew was stupid at the time and Straily for Castillo. So much self harm

I also know we arent trying to move Anderson to the OF but just to better stack the lineup if you can put him in RF, Brinson in CF, granderson in LF, and then rojas and Riddle splitting SS and 3b instead of Anderson anchored at 3b and having to put Herrera or another retread in the 3rd OF spot.

                  - - - - - - - - - -

Riddle has consistently exceeded my expectations. He should be playing every time vs RHP and have Rojas against LHp and sprinkle him in at other spots as a utility guy to give others rest at 1b, 2b, etc. thats a really solid platoon. I also think our lineup against RHP is going to be signfiicantly better than vs LHP given it seems like mattingly is always gonna rest Walker and Granderson against LHP

                  - - - - - - - - - -

Granted the only game ive missed in the short year thus far is the one game brinson went 2-4 with a double, but he has looked awful in the AB's ive seen. Seems like he's always off balance and over thinking rather than trusting his abilities. Its 4 games and he had the HR robbed and other hard hit balls, but just way too many throw away ab's. He's looking more and more like a secondary piece if he ever works out just because of the plate discipline is lacking. Him and Alfaro both seem like guys who should ideally be in like the 5 and 6 spot in the lineup to provide power but not further up in the lineup becuase of the lack of plate discipline and OBP.

Still way too early though and marlins park really needs to move the fences in again to make it a little more hitter friendly. Its really ridiculous in some parts.

It really is refreshing to be excited to tune into the marlins games every night because you know every single game if we're healthy we have a legitimatley talented and MLB quality SP on the mound every game. Literally the most disappointed i am to tune into a game is Urena and he is still a legitimate MLB rotation talent.

I am a broken record and ive said this a lot and we really arent close to a contending team hitting wise, but it really is a huge thing in general and specifically compared to what we've had in the last 10 years that we have actual 5 MLB quality SP's in our rotation.

We've been throwing out maybe 3 MLB caliber starters in our rotation since the stadium opened. This is just a list of guys who have spent time in the rotation because we have no depth in recent years: Peters, Brigham, Jarlin, Volquez, Worley, Koehler, Despaigne, Nicolino, Locke, O'Grady, Chen, Cashner, Cosart, Jacob Turner, Randy Wolf, Brad freaking Penny, Kevin Slowey, Leblanc. And that's just since 2013.
Having 5 guys who you could make legit arguments for 4 of the 5 to turn into #2/3's and not be ridiculous is a huge thing. And having them just starting their team control mostly as well as another wave this year with Neidert and Gallen and then a few more in a year or 2 with Sixto, Rogers, Garrett, Stewart, Yamamoto, Holloway, Guzman, etc. We're in a really good position SP wise moving forward. If i'm the front office i am absolutely pounding position players in the draft this year. Need some power bats in the system.

Bogaerts just signed an extension with Boston. Weird, but looking at the list of hitting free agents next year, the guy I want to sign most is..... Ozuna. Weirdly his bat would be greatly desired in this lineup and we can pull a rare smart marlins move of selling him off for two tanking years and getting 2 rotation pieces in Gallen and Alcantara and then signing him back when we get closer to contention. Would add to a crowded OF but there are literally no sure things in that group so id rather deal with a surplus later on.

I also dont think he is gonna break the bank given the market in recent years. He's also only gonna be 29 next year so i'd give him a reasonable 3-4 year deal. Something like 3 for 55 or 4 for 70. I think thats realistic with the way the market has gone for free agents recently. I'd love to keep the rest of the team and sign him and Jose Abreu to a small 1-2 year deal to anchor 1b for a few years and roll things over to next year. You'd have Alfaro, Abreu, Diaz, Rojas/Riddle, Anderson, Ozuna, Brinson, and 3rd OF. Line the deals up to come up when this current crop of young guys need extensions and we can overpay them for right now while everyone else is lower paid.

I legit would have given Boegarts $75+ million more. I think he really undersold himself. Shockingly actually. Boston is a good place to be though.

Rendon is by far the best bat available next year. He smokes Ozuna.

fish16 does this thing where if Yelich is on fire and Brinson is playing horrible he contemplates how things would have looked if the new ownership didn’t (checks notes: very foolishly) trade him.

And then when Brinson hits 5 HR’s in 4 days in Spring Training he tells us that in the end, we’ll end up doing really well in the Yelich trade.

You're forgetting former Marlin Trevor Williams. He was Pirate star today ... six shutout innings and the win.

Of the good players in our last core, Ozuna's the only one who hasn't said anything negative about the organization. I believe he even said he wanted to be a Marlin for life after he left. I'm not sure where he fits with all the outfielders coming up though. Maybe he can learn 1B...I believe he's had arm problems since he left anyway.

what is the point of continuing to lament the dumb shit done by the previous regime?

they did dumb shit. the previous owner meddled in on-field decisions. the new owners decided to acquiesce to yelich's trade request so they could just move on building their thing. jose should have turned sooner. move on. we've got what we've got now.

Agreed. Re-hashing the Loria regime is tiresome...not to mention pointless. Everyone just needs to move on.
