They seems to gravitate at SS to defenders (Rojas, Wendle, Amaya, Nasim), so I imagine it would have to be a pretty slam dunk SS. Edman is an awesome SS for his career why I keep going back to him mainly, as well as Peraza has that upside hope.

Edman and some OF sticks who don't embarrass themselves defensively are no brainers for me short and long term. Edman is doubly perfect as he can also play CF if someone works out like Amaya, etc.

    What about

    Edman, Flaherty, Gallegos
Rogers, Fulton, Mesa Jr., and two throw in arms - something like Soriano and Fitterer

I suppose they can have Eder instead, whatever they want. Garrett would probably cost them something more.

Resign Edman for 5 years and you have a super-duper flex team on paper with Edwards and Myers seemingly becoming some real players to try out, and Gallegos is signed for next year in a contract year. Added maybe $6.5m for 2023 and another $11m for 2024 or so, so not a huge financial commitment.

They'd need another OF for now or later (and would have some FA money for a 1 year guy in 2024 and maybe they do a minor trade for a rental right now for 2023), but all of a sudden the team makes sense. Getting Carlson on top would be even better and just sign pitchers you need as the bats are potentially set for years absent luxury upgrades.

    • edman is an above average player who had a really good year last year, but i think they need a higher offensive profile for a guy they acquire for SS. He's very average offensively. he does have speed which is nice, but we need run producers. If they couple him with a run producing guy somewhere else i can get behind it, but if that's the big offensive addition that wont do much to move the needle. He has a lower OPS this year than Jon Berti.

The guy i really like is Dylan Carlson. He wouldnt necessarily move the needle a ton this year but that's the kind of high upside, team controlled guy id love to take a chance on. I'd do rogers + for him, but that's not saying much since i dont think rogers has been good for over 2 years now. But sliding Carlson to CF long term, Jazz back to 2b to try to keep him healthy, Arraez to 1b long term would go a long way. Carlson, Edman, and Montgomery would cost a lot but i think that would move the needle for me. Then go get Gomes and another RP for very cheap and that's a tremendous deadline if we couple it with Edwards coming up and playing a role finally and Hampson being shipped to the moon.

Although the more im looking into edman the more i like him. Baseball savant page is really solid and he's great defensively. he's not a 30 hr guy but he's got decent gap power and speed to make things happen. it would certainly fill a hole long term at SS. We could really make progress if we get him, Carlson, and can find a C somewhere, anywhere. Things look much better all of a sudden.

Next year you could replace Soler with Jazz at DH to try to keep him healthy and slot edwards in at 2b with Arraez at 1b.

      C- Please find someone
      1b- Arraez
      2b- Edwards
      SS- Edman
      3b- Segura
      LF- DLC
      CF- Carlson
      RF- Sanchez
      DH- Jazz

      • speaking of Carlson. His BA is .236 and XBA is .245, and his slugging is .365 and his expected slugging is .406. could be buying relatively low on a really great ascending asset in future years. The more i think about it the more i like Carlson, Edman, and Montgomery at the deadline. Im not sure what that would cost. Id assume Eder is involved, but i would think they would try to get Cabrera too, and they would have to be super confident in Meyer moving forward and Eury being good for the rest of the year pretty immediately. Id try for Rogers and Eder plus more prospects and id do that in a heartbeat, but id stay away from moving cabrera at the deadline. his ceiling is too high IMO

        • Would 2B keep Jazz healthy? I ask seriously. I feel it is 2 days a week in the field and 2-3 DHs a week and reassess spring 2025. Mini-Buxton him and sit most lefties.

I'm in to blowing the Cardinals out for whatever. Edman/Carlson are perfect. All their guys are good. Get them pitchers.

          This is frankly awesome

          Contreras, Knizner/Herrara
          Goldschmidt
          Gorman, Donovan
          Winn, DeJong
          Arenado
          O'Neill, Burleson
          Nootbar, _____ (O'Neill)
          Walker

They would be trading two CF guys with Carlson/Edman, so I imagine Mesa Jr. is heading back in that as a piece. Cards took a college guy who might stick in CF a little 1st round this year so they may have a fast mover to help there too. O'Neill can dabble in CF. I think they'd be fine if the pitchers are worth it too them. At minimum, that's likely 7 really good regulars and the other 5 guys can play and should be good in minimum platoon roles. They'd have $40-50m to spend on a major SP, an innings eater, and bench bats and last relievers. I will be picking the Cards in the central to open the year for sure.

if they hadnt dug themselves such a big hole already and was like 3-5 games better so far this year i would still pick them to win the central. I think they are still the best team in the division, Wainwright just fell of a cliff and looks done and they dont have the pitching right now.

jazz got hurt sliding into 2nd last year. Granted he also did get hurt swinging the bat this year as well, but i think 2b is a "safer" position to keep him healthy than CF if that is the ultimate goal. He cant be counted on moving forward if he is continuously playing recklessly and getting hurt consistently.

                  • so victor victor mesa disappeared to..... the bahamas where he posted himself jumping into the ocean. im guessing he just accepts that his career sucked, he got his bonus years ago, and he will retire.

                    • great off day. every team in front of us lost. now tied for the 3rd wild card spot with the phillies again. 1.5 behind both the giants and dbacks for the 1st and 2nd wild card spot. hopefully the off day allowed them to regroup and get ready for a series against a team we are a lot better than and need to take advantage of.

maybe bring eury and edwards up and stop acting like youre trying to win and actually try to win? Edwards is hitting .358, .878 OPS, 27/28 in steals, 32 walks to just 14 k's in 279 PA's. And yet we continue to have garrett hampson over him. its absurd. He has deserved a call up for going on 2 months.

                      • They don't need a 5th SP until around August 1st so they don't "need" Eury for the next week and a half to mention. This is all normal rest or more.

                        21 Garrett
                        22 Luzardo
                        23 Cabrera
                        24 OFF
                        25 Sandy
                        --
                        26 Garrett
                        27 OFF
                        28 Luzardo
                        29 Cabrera
                        30 Sandy
                        ---
                        31 Garrett
                        1 - Eury
2 - Then start Luzardo, Cabrera, Sandy, Garrett, and Eury 5 man for a few weeks and reassess in September. They'll have to shave Luzardo and Eury time in September if they are still in it, but maybe that is easy if they get obliterated so I say, let them rip in August. Adding another SP would be great here to go to a 6 man rotation but never skip Sandy to help all of their innings.

Edwards has to be defensively at this point. I have nothing for that one

he is one of the best pitchers in baseball. they fucking need him. He isnt their 5th fucking starter, he is by far and away their best starter this year. enough of this bullshit. He showed 0 signs of any fatigue. they are being way overly cautious with him and realistically, it is mostly for super 2 reasons. it is a fucking disgrace in one of if not the best season this franchise has had in 20 years. No one is saying throw him 7 innings every game until the end of time. But when a guy shows 0 signs of fatigue and quite frankly more signs of being a complete anomaly physically, you dont shut him down like this. It is a kick in the balls to every member of that team to send him down and bring cueto up.

It’s ALL Super 2 related like lou said.

lou, can you remind me how long Eury needs to stay down?

i know, it's just such a minor league franchise thing to do given our performance this year prior to him being sent down. this front office deserves to miss the playoffs pulling shit like that to save money years down the road as opposed to trying to make the playoffs this year. Saving some innings for him for the playoffs is going to be awesome when they miss the playoffs entirely in part to him not being up here for a critical month.
