  • So getting the first or second wild card spot means braves in the nlds apparently with the new format. 5 spot is the worst possible spot because we wouldn’t get home games in the wild card round but still get the braves if we win. 6 spot means avoiding them but no potential home games in the wild card round.

It would be real easy to do this over a 6 game/normal week span. I feel 4 days a week would be good as that's effectively a 450+ PA pace and that is a good workload.

      Starts
      C Fortes 3, Stallings 3
      1B Cooper 4, Yuli 2
      2B Arraez 6
      SS Wendle 4, Berti 2
      3B Segura 4, Berti 2
      LF DLC 5, Myers 1
      CF Edwards 4, Myers 2
      RF Sanchez 4, Myers 1, Soler 1
      DH Soler 5, Yuli 1

The random off days for Arraez and Soler can be spread around.

If Edwards and Myers are solid, when Jazz comes back they can just kick Yuli to the curb and knock Segura off a game or two and that's fine for Jazz. He should honestly be a 4 day a week guy and never play 3 games in a row at this point unless the second or third one is a DH. Just maximize the RHP splits and get through the year. Easy to reapportion the defense with Arraez getting some 1B time instead of Yuli.

And then is Garcia just going to be DFA'd? And DLC, Edwards, and Myers have options if there is a trade upgrade on top of this.

Should be interesting. I have doubts Myers and Edwards can carry a heavy load for a true contender, but now is the time to see before the deadline for sure. Would be incredible if they don't need to trade assets for a large bat and these guys work out. Could just get that SP and bullpen luxury upgrade.

      • I also applaud them drafting a pitcher as it is all the can scout, but that Teel guy looks real interesting so hopefully that doesn't bite them in the ass. He is perfect on paper.

On some level, it does make trading the minor league SP more expendable. We'll see.

        • There is earning a promotion and breaking down the wall for a promotion. Xavier Edwards is doing the latter. Went 2-4 with a walk yet again today. Hitting .368 now, ops over 900 at .903, and he stole another base for 20/21 steals. You cannot continue to keep him down. He has earned it, give him a chance. There is nothing else he can do at aaa to show he deserves it any more

          • Did they change that rule about trading draft picks for a full year after the draft? Can they use him in a trade or is it just depth to trade other prospects for upgrades at the deadline.

we have 35. Id love to get the Miami 3b at that pick

            • Nvm, they changed it to after the World Series after the trea turner situation years back

              • I'm not going to pretend like I have much knowledge of this years draft, definitely have been more in the know in the past, but on paper I like our 1st pick.

It is my understanding that if you get the 2nd or 3rd Wild Card spot you get zero home games in the Wild Card series. Is that correct?

Yes. The better seed in the 3 game wild card round gets all 3 home games. The worst division winner, likely the brewers or reds, will play the worst wild card team, with the first and second wild card teams squaring off.

so we can guarantee ourselves home playoff games with the first wild card, but also guarantee yourselves a trip to Atlanta to get demolished most likely. Probably too early to worry about this anyways

                    • According to many, we took the best high school arm with our first pick, and then took the best high school lefty at 35. Nice.

                      • Kemp alderman from ole miss is the last pick today. Absurd power apparently. Corner outfielder with an arm that could allow him to become a catcher. College guy but not too old. Sounds a little like a righty schwarber

                        • Alderman had impressive numbers this past year. Also seems like the kind of bat they’ve consistently failed to develop in recent years. We’ll see.

                          • I would have loved to see the Marlins draft a hitter that pans out at 10, but hard to be upset with taking a guy like Meyer there. Big time upside for an organization that does well with pitching. Then they come back and take a high upside lefty in comp A.

I’m really intrigued with Kemp Alderman, though. Big, big time raw power, and while he’ll probably be a corner OF, he has caught some, and they said they’re going to eventually give him some time there.

Overall, they add to a position of strength that they’ve done well with historically, and fill an organizational need for power. That’s a solid day 1.

                            • From ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel on Alderman:

                              47. Kemp Alderman (20.9), RF, Ole Miss

His exit velos are so high that they broke the formula I use to translate them to the 20-80 scale; it gave him 85-grade in-game power. He's also a real athlete, with 55-grade speed and a 60 arm that's dabbled with catching in the past. If he can hit .250 in the big leagues, he could be an All-Star. If he makes it to pick 53, Orioles GM Mike Elias may do a backflip as he's turning in the card because this is exactly the kind of player the O's excel at developing.
