Congratulations to J Davis on his auspicious Marlins debut. 6 for 7 and some walks too. Top shelf CF defense and speed in a tiny package - my sort of guy even at the ripe old age of 31. A well done to whoever scouted and touted this guy. Just wish he had been batting leadoff for all four Colorado games. The Marlins may have swept them. His minor league numbers over ten years are somewhat superior to Jon Berti's (also accumulated over ten years).

My guy Monteverde was scratched from his scheduled start last Tuesday. Not a word anywhere of what the problem may be.

I was a little shocked at the use of Brazoban. He had been a disaster lately - as in six earned runs in two innings over his last three appearances. When you consider that, it was kind of like a forfeit after all that hard work (and luck) to tie it up. Hoeing hasn't allow a single earned run in has last six appearances. Don't know why he was removed after just a third of an inning.

I wish Skip wasn't so quick with the hook for his starters. Tommy Hutton got on him a weeks or so ago about leaving Garrett out there to figure it out, when the pitch count was still relatively low. I think that can be said about a handful of outings so far for our starters. But then, on the flip side, he'll leave in a RP who clearly doesn't have it that day.

I think he's left Sandy in too long multiple times FWIW. Sandy probably earned that early season leash I guess, but they've hung out some guys to dry. Like Garrett that one time they refused to take him out despite the shelling. Garrett should probably be a 2x through the lineup guy so I'm not going to be annoyed with him. The fact they turned Garrett into an asset is amazing and they "get" his arm IMO.

I think the pitching usage has generally been very good but I do agree some recent bullpen guys have been left in an extra batter or two. Ultimately this also goes down to talent. The bullpen has been very good for who they are, but they are really missing Puk right now and some right hander upgrade somewhere along the line.

Anthony Maldonado catches my eye as a guy who may be ready to help. The K's and WHIP look right.

Sandy is the exception among the starters. He doesn't trust the other guys enough, and has maybe trusted Sandy too much (although I'm not sure I can really fault him for that part, because as bad as Sandy has been this year, he's earned it). I think pulling the young pitchers early has taxed the bullpen, and is doing somewhat of a disservice to the development of the younger guys. You can't just let them pitch 5 innings every game. At some point they have to take that next step, and while some of that is certainly on the pitchers themselves, I'm not sure he's letting them develop that part of their game. That was the point Hutton made, and one that I agree with.

In the latest Barry Jackson/Craig Mish article they had some interesting things to say about the Marlins and the trade market. They start the article off saying "the Marlins are canvassing the trade market for upgrades at catcher and shortstop, according to industry sources." That's awfully encouraging, but at the same time history tells us getting a deal across the line with this front office can be difficult. I'm also curious about the quality of the "upgrades" we're talking about. Almost literally anyone is an upgrade at catcher, and you can essentially say the same at SS. I wonder how serious they are, and if they're actually dangling high end prospects and/or a ML SP.

Yeah, with us having had the same issues in the offseason, I don't have high hopes for us getting anything meaningful.

I think it all depends on their willingness to trade top prospects and/or ML starters. If they are willing to do that, they should be able to get someone meaningful. But it feels like their being a little stingy with their prospects, so that's obviously going to prevent them from getting anyone good.

Which prospects do you believe the team is being "stingy" with? Are there any that you feel would be in demand?

Lee makes a good point to get something significant you’d have to deal probably Rogers or Cabrera. If Eder could get back on the field he could be very valuable, but not sure when that’ll happen. Same goes for Meyer obviously.

Good info, so maybe they don't like Nasim and Amaya for next year (probably the right call).

This says to me a very very easy target - Tim Anderson and Yasmani Grandal. Grandal has a pretty terrible statcast, but he's a rental and would just cost money absorption. Plus if thats the kicker to get Anderson might be worth it. Anderson just has to be a rebound guy.

That's gotta cost an Eder/Meyer/Cappe/maybe Watson centerpieces, probably a top 8-15 guy, and two more prospects we've heard of outside top 20. Hard to say if this is smart as they are objectively bad (run differential), but if this is their version of "culture" look at the Rangers a year after the Seager/Semien deals. Look at Bobrovsky years later. These moves eventually pay off, etc.
