Is it surprising they have three qualified guys in top 47 in batting average - Arraez (1), DLC (T-15), and Berti (T-47) and their team batting average is FOURTEENTH of all teams (.250!).

How the fuck do these guys have the fourteenth best batting average and historically low run totals? Is this when they say "Luck"?

Walks - 29th and a bad game to being 30th (6.8%)
Slugging - 22nd (.383)
Strikeouts - 17th (23.1%)
Base running (via FG) - 28th

So they don't walk, don't slug, and suck on the bases. They are chipping into the strikeouts though.


Another fun one. Tampa somehow has 94 HR and the Marlins have 43. JFC. A good team probably have 60+ bombs as of now showing how far ahead TB is.

And of course, Tampa is 2nd in base running.

Which brings me too....

Arraez is a terrible base runner so far, and so is Segura, DLC, and Stallings. Berti is also below average with Cooper. There is some positive regression coming here as Arraez is usually neutral and Berti close to the tops in the league. But another one of those "little things" the team is not doing well as a collective. They need to work on DLC as he has a solid sprint speed (59) and likely has room for improvement unlike Segura who is still quick (52nd) but is likely is who he is. Edwards is their third most valuable base runner in 16 PA is what I am saying in that LOL sample size. Jazz and Hampson are both very good which you'd expect. Soler, Garcia, Burdick, Wendle, Fortes, and even Yuli are neutral contributors.

Don't forget double plays. Seems like we ground into one of those every inning.

1st in baseball with 46 GIDP. A tip of the cap to a good observation. That's a dozen more than middle of the pack, so that's almost 2 extra ones a week. So there is the negative aspect to never walking/contact approach. All those dribblers and poor base running are eating outs.

Has anyone else noticed that X Edwards' numbers at Jacksonville compared very favorably to what Arraez was doing in 2019 at similar age. Add the speed and defense factor and you have a player that should be an everyday guy right now.

Stallings should have been replaced in the offseason.

Being thirty pounds overweight, Garcia should have never been signed. Same thing applies to Cueto. That's on Ng.

The problem with Stallings is, guys like Austin Hedges (who also suck) are worth $5m or more in free agency. That's more than Stallings. There wasn't really a suitable FA option (and if there was why would they sign here with legitimate competition with Fortes and/or not a contender?) and he was as good a rebound candidate as anyone else out there in their price point. He's not working out, but I don't fault them here. The only solution would have been trading for someone like G. Moreno or D. Jansen. Going big.

Hard to cast stones on Cueto yet.

As always mentioned, Edwards had a nice 100+ PA in AAA this year, but was pretty underwhelming over 400 PA in 2022. Maybe he has turned a corner (I haven't seen news on new swings/approaches/etc. but maybe?), but comparing him to Arraez is a bit of a stretch which is my point here. I won't argue why not try him out 4-5 starts a week and see what happens. Crazier things have happened. If they get a Berti out of Edwards, that would be amazing. Arraez would be one of the best moves in the last few seasons for any team. I'll be shocked if the Rays made that mistake.

Yea, he was very good his age 18-21 years and fell on his face last year. Hopefully this is the case. He did get a FV70(!) upside hit tool even if no power is ever coming. He does that he's going to be Pierre. This same argument applies to Groshans..... very good age 18-21, fell on his face last year at 22 until he got to the Marlins AAA affiliate in a SSS, scuffled MLB, and is back on his face this year. But with some silver linings in the BB/K and BABIP suggesting more is coming and he is very unlucky. Maybe he just hits all dribblers though. These guys are young so they have some time. I'll give the FO credit for targeting very interesting guys that have arguably high floors with contact/defense potential, and some legitimate hit tool ceilings. If they can get some thump from Berry, Cappe, and Watson, the next generation might be Lee's dream of the super athletic and fast everyone plays everywhere types.

Some general thoughts about the team:


I'd like to see them make moves NOW that are aimed at the long term, but also help in the short term, if that makes sense. i.e. controlled guys that will help now, but aren't rentals.



It's like they're waiting for us to be out of it so they can default to the usual selling......"oh great job guys, you did a better this year, but we're selling anyway!"

The organization needs to build on the (relative) success and change the culture for the better. Show the team/players you'll reward them for good play with an improved team. Stop perpetually kicking the can to next year and the year after and the year after waiting for when the stars, planets, moons, satellites, planes, etc all align perfectly because it's never going to happen. "Wait til next year when everyone is healthy" just isn't realistic, especially this our horrible lineup.


Even with the current improvements record wise (obviously we'll see at the end of the year), I'm in the camp of strongly considering letting Kim walk (final year of her contract) in the offseason. She hasn't shown the ability to put together a complete roster. year 1, she gets somewhat of a pass, as I think she came in later in the offseason and had to learn the system....but year 2 and 3 having the same unresolved issues/holes every year is BS.


Unfortunately letting her go (she's in the last year of her contract, so like Mike Hill, it wouldn't even be firing her), would result in the same bad press of "Marlins get rid of first female GM!!!!!!" But we can't not make a move based on that.....I don't care if we had a Martian in charge, the results - or lack thereof - of the last 3 years speak for themselves and should result in a dismissal, short of a wild card/playoffs berth.

Bring in a Tampa exec so we can actually be a well run "small market" team....

All that said, reality is, Bruce will likely see "oh we did better this year, let's give her an extension! Good job everyone!"

Edwards having speed, unlike Groshans is a big plus in his favor in my eyes, and the biggest plus is it seems like he'll stick at the premium defensive positions, where Groshans has seemed destined for 3B even when he was a big time prospect.
