  • That catch by Lewin was unreal.

    • So was Bleday just saving his breakout for the bigs?

He was good in aaa this year. The power finally came through. He looks really good and with a comfortable floor

I understand the power was good, he was getting on base and getting better as the year goes on, but still in no league is .228 BA good.

          • I didn’t see this Sandy implosion coming.

            • Miggy barely hitting seems to move in slow motion on the base paths still somehow really fucking good defensively.

              • LeBlanc is a disaster waiting to happen at all times when he’s not standing in the batters box.

Jean Segura’s bs hit started Sandy’s whole implosion. Sad, actually.

Bleday and Burdick had almost identical numbers at JAX with regard to extra base hits, walks and strike outs. Burdick is the better defender and runs better. Both seem like average major leaguers at the very best.

First, batting average is an antiquated stat, obp and OPS is what you should be looking at. Second, his overall BA was hampered by his super slow start BA wise in April at .196. By month his BA was .189, .213, then .256 and .259 his last two months. His OBP by month was always promising, even in April. By month he was at .341, .370, ..380, and .368. And he was the victim of terrible luck with a .268 BABIP for the year. His home and road splits were crazy, I'm not sure if jax has a great pitchers park, but he hit .173 with a .658 OPS at home and a .269 AVG and .964 on the road. He was great in AAA. and his k/bb throughout his whole career has indicated a really good player if the power came along, which it has.

Bleday had 10 more walks in 21 less plate appearances, so no. You'r'e also just cherry picking similar stats given that burdick had a lower OBP and significantly lower Slugging percentage. Both have good potential at the major league level with their power and ability to draw walks. and they both had terrible BABIP which indicates their overall numbers don't indicate how well they both truly performed. They are both really quality OF prospects. We will see what they actually do at the major league level, but bleday has been a breath of fresh air to watch compared to the guys we have trotted out there this year with absolutely 0 power.

Of course I'm going to look at things like OBP and OPS first, but overall he had a .337 OBP and .746 OPS overall in the minors. Pretty pedestrian, and this is because his average was consistently so low. .228 BA in AAA but .225 BA overall. That's almost 1000 PAs of bad luck if that's what we're attributing it too.

I'm encouraged like you, of what we've seen so far of him in the big leagues, indications of a corner being turned in AAA are there. But it's still hard for me to wrap my head around the consistent struggles he had in the minors, for a player of his pedigree.
