First, batting average is an antiquated stat, obp and OPS is what you should be looking at. Second, his overall BA was hampered by his super slow start BA wise in April at .196. By month his BA was .189, .213, then .256 and .259 his last two months. His OBP by month was always promising, even in April. By month he was at .341, .370, ..380, and .368. And he was the victim of terrible luck with a .268 BABIP for the year. His home and road splits were crazy, I'm not sure if jax has a great pitchers park, but he hit .173 with a .658 OPS at home and a .269 AVG and .964 on the road. He was great in AAA. and his k/bb throughout his whole career has indicated a really good player if the power came along, which it has.
I'm encouraged like you, of what we've seen so far of him in the big leagues, indications of a corner being turned in AAA are there. But it's still hard for me to wrap my head around the consistent struggles he had in the minors, for a player of his pedigree.
