I'm trying to workshop what they are doing in my head.

Maybe it's something like this (to note, this is just some hot take averaging arb in my head, recalling what guys are under salary, as well as apportioning all CC players to $750k)

    Alfaro ($3m), Jackson/Henry ($750k) 3.75
    Aguilar ($7m), Lewin ($750k) $7.75
    Jazz ($750k), Berti ($1.25m) $2m
    ________, Rojas ($5.5m) $5.5M
    Anderson ($5m) $5
    Sanchez ($750k) $750k
    _________, De La Cruz/Miller/Harrison/low end internal option ($750k) $750k
    Cooper ($3m) $3m

Bats= $28.5m and needing at minimum 2 players

    Sandy/Pablo ($5m), Rogers ($750k), Luzardo ($750k), Sixto ($750k), Cabrera/Thompson ($750k)
    Bass ($3M), Floro ($1.25m), Bender ($750k), Holloway ($750k), E. Hernandez ($1.5m), and Thompson/Poteet/Neidert ($750k)
Bleier ($1.75m), club controlled lefty ($750k)

Pitching=17m and needing nothing but a lefty acquisition who will certainly be young and CC

Total= Approx. $45 million and needing two players, likely at least one is club controlled.

Potential major midseason callups - Bleday, Meyer, Eder

Basically, it's choosing Aguilar over Duvall (as I was thinking they'd figure out how to retain Duvall for next year), and then shifting Cooper to the OF. Cooper is fine to platoon out there with some new players.

This is screaming to me someone like Chris Taylor in free agency as the "big" splash who can play somewhere everyday. That helps depth in the middle infield and OF. Then, trading Pablo/Sandy for a young stud CF. This is what I think they are planning to do. Punt on catcher for a year and see how the new guys and Fortes/Banfield do.

If it's a CF we all like, and at minimum Chris Taylor, I can live with this to get to July. Adding Bleday, Meyer, and Eder in July, plus potentially moving more pitching for another bat and that team looks pretty interesting.

And most importantly for the Marlins brass - cheap and around $60m.

Now see that, and imagine a world they sign Correa on top of this and kick Cooper/Hernandez off the team to shave $4m (or Alfaro too and shave another $2m), and it's around $80m all-in for 2022

    • turns out the trade mish was hyping was max meyer for Brandon marsh of the angels. Angels backed out at the last minute. Not sure he is the guy I would have loved for Meyer especially. If I trade a guy its eder but this should give us an idea of what they do in the offseason. They are assuredly gonna use some of the AA pitching depth in Meyer, Eder, and/or Mccambley to get an outfielder and then I have to think they use pablo to get a catcher.

Talking about free agency, if there's a big time free agent who makes sense for us its kris bryant to me because of the versatility in the corner outfield, 3b, and 1b. You can really build around that much easier with his ability to move around the diamond.

      • Some interesting nuggets from Mish and Barry Jackson today. The biggest one is Miami offered Max Meyer for Brandon Marsh before the Angels pulled out. That would be a hell of a prospect trade, and I’m not sure how I would feel about it. That’s not like offering up Zac Gallen. They also said Miami went after Reynolds from Pittsburgh, but they were asking too much. He said they also like Stallings. He noted they feel like they need to address CF and C with long term moves.

It’s interesting that they don’t mention SS. Either they are going to ride it out with Rojas and hope one of the minor league guys gets here soon, or they may be planning to address that with one of the big name FA.

They also said Miami expects DH to come to the NL so that’s why they kept Aguilar. But that they also offered him a modest two year deal that he turned down.

They said that Miami expected Duvall do decline his option, and that’s why they moved him.

I'll go back to my idea from yesterday, sign a Marte/Taylor I think 3 years / $14 mil per gets it done, maybe you need an extra year for Taylor. Bring in Kris Bryant to play LF 4 years / $18 million per. I disagree that all that the bullpen would need is lefty, I think you need to bring in a legit closer at maybe 2 years / $8 million per. Trade Pablo or Sandy for a young SS. Maybe Pablo to the Yankees for Oswald Peraza and Trey Sweeney the Yankees first round pick this year.

          1. Marte/Taylor - CF
          2. Jazz - 2B
          3. Bryant - LF
          4. Aguilar - 1B
          5. Cooper - DH You probably alternate 1B/DH between Cooper, Aguilar and Lewin
          6. Sanchez - RF
          7. Anderson - 3B
          8. Rojas - SS to be replaced by Peraza midseason and Rojas takes over as Utility Man
          9. Jackson/Alfaro/Fortes/Henry - C

          Rotation - Rogers/Sandy/Thompson/Sixto/Cabrera

Bullpen: $8 million Closer, Floro, Bass, Bender, Holloway, Bleier, Poteet and you probably deal one (or two) of Elieser/Garrett/Neidert for a quality lefty-reliever and a prospect.

          Potential Mid-Season Call-ups: Peraza/Bleday/Burdick/Luzardo/Meyer/Eder/McCambley

Draft: Daniel Susac - C from Arizona

and you have this team for $85 million, which probably puts you around the 25th highest payroll.

Sandy and Anderson are really the only guys who are immediate re-sign candidates, You replace Cooper and Aguilar with Lewin/Burdick/Bleday/Conine/Encarnacion and you still have enough starting pitching talent left over if you need to get a catcher down the road or maybe bring in bullpen help at the deadline.

And all of a sudden your lower levels at A-Ball are pretty stacked:

Eury Perez - SP (18 years old 2.09 ERA, 12.56 Ks/9 at Jupiter)
          Kahlil Watson - CF/SS/2B
          Joe Mack - C
          Cody Morissette - 2B/3B
          Trey Sweeney - 3B/SS
Jose Salas - SS (18 years old 1.038 OPS in 64 ABs so far in the Complex League)
          Yiddi Cappe - SS/2B
Nasim Nunez - SS/2B (20 years old, no power, but .366 OBP with 33 SBs and excellent defense at Jupiter)
Ian Lewis - SS/2B (18 years old, .838 OPS in 62 ABs so far in the Complex League)
          Jordan McCants - SS/2B
and guys like Fulton/Fitterer/Mokma/Mesa Jr. all with pretty good potential as well.

You resign Sandy and Anderson, get rid of Cooper and Aguilar and your payroll is not going to go up a ton in those 3/4 years, then Bryant and CF come off the books when you're ready to re-sign Jazz/Sanchez and all the pitching, and at that point hopefully a lot of the names I listed above are ready to rock, I think at that point you have the sustainability Jeter keeps talking about.

          • Or you could revisit the Brandon Marsh deal. Make it Pablo for Marsh, and then go out and sign Trevor Story for maybe even a little less than what I was thinking those CF would go for.

                • Burdick, Bleday and Conine all homered in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

                    • "Most talented catcher in the game" Holly is such a clown.

                      Comment

                      • I think Holly meant that Alfaro was the most athletic catcher ... the talent to be selective at the plate and consistent behind the plate is missing.

Rogers: ROY is slipping away in a hurry. After every start, Rogers acknowledges that he was trying to be too fine with his pitches and then he goes out and does the same thing in his next start. He just needs to throw more fastballs.

De La Cruz: Long bat and long swing. Don't like what I've seen there.

                        • They’re using a roster spot on Alex Jackson and starting Sandy Leon. Brilliant.
