it's sad that i fear alfaro going down because of the alternatives but here we are. I have done 0 research into this but we have to have the worst production from the catcher position since alfaro got here right?

It’s not a ton of ABs but Alfaro’s numbers this year aren’t completely terrible.

i really like mattingly, but his moves are just so puzzling at times, even in blowouts. I think he is the absolutely perfect bench coach. That accentuates his strength which is handling the clubhouse and allows him to avoid making the managerial moves. to me I think they move on from him to Rowson next year and Donny becomes some sort of voice in the front office. Mattingly has done all he really can here but I think he is more of a perfect rebuilding team manager than contending team manager. He served his purpose and was a great guy to have as we started the rebuild, now go get more of a analytically minded decision maker for manager.

i mean they are pretty bad. he hasn't hit for power, strikes out a ton, doesn't walk. It hasn't been as noticeable lately but he is not a good defensive catcher. I just don't know what he brings since his only tool, his plus power, is useless because his eye at the plate is so bad he never puts himself into a hitters count to be able to get pitches to hit. His ab's are just so pathetic most of the time. every swing is a complete guess.

I 100% agree he’s bad. We’ve seen enough of him to know this. I’m just saying if he could somehow maintain what he’s done so far this year over a whole season (.700 OPS) that’s about league average for a starting catcher.

I've been super busy lately and was out of town for a week so at this point you could tell me 10 different guys were the #4 and #5 guys in the rotation and I might believe you. You can point to the hitting, but the only reason we arent right in the mix for first right now is because of the injuries to sixto and elieser and the resulting guys who have had to make the starts in their place. sixto added to the top 3 and elieser giving you 5 decent innings every 5th day can carry this lineup. Cant tell you how much I want to see Meyer join that top 4 and have them all stay healthy.

It's hard to have 3 starters at an ace level and a bullpen who has had good numbers and still be 8 games under. The run differential reflects this team is a lot better than the record indicates to this point. Unfortunately, its division or bust this year. NL West has 3 teams essentially that are pretty close to guaranteed to make the playoffs already and if not them 2nd place in the NL central is pretty strong too.

I’m with you, but Ng was asked and basically said we will not see Meyer or Eder in the majors this year.

His numbers are beyond consistent beyond last years pandemic year. He is the perfect guy to fit into the middle of the lineup. A 1-2-3 of Jazz, Bryant, Bleday would be unreal

Meyer i could see but unless they think what eder is doing Is a mirage I don't really get that. maybe not right now, but maybe another month or 2 of good performance IDK how you don't at least try if the back of the rotation is still a mess.

what do you think he gets in an extension? After the last few years and the unevenness of the free agent market I don't have a feel for it. 3-4 years 60-80 million is what I think I could see him getting on the open market but maybe the labor deal questions for next year and the revenue losses of the pandemic years. Plus teams were already realizing before the pandemic that free agency is rarely worth the price.

I'd be lying if I said I had any clue. At first blush, I would guess $20M per, so probably close to what you said. But with Covid impacting finances, and his age, that feels high the more I look at it. Realmuto just got $23M per year, and is younger and a catcher. He got 5 years, which you'd think is a decent bit longer than what Marte will get. Ozuna might be a better comp, and he got 4 years at $65M. He's younger also, though, so if you take that AAV for 3 years, you might have something close. So maybe 3 years, and somewhere between 45-50M?

The good news is, he wants to be here. So that should mean you're not going to overpay to get him.

What Eder is doing is not a mirage. He's throwing 94-96, with an absolutely nasty slider from the left side.
