This is the fear I have and I also harken back to the original Jeter/Sherman presser....hearing Jeter when asked about winning he said "We need the franchise to be sustainable"...that is an economic term not an athletic/competitive term. They need the payroll to be low, the luxury tax money to roll in, and the national contract TV, Radio, Internet and stadium naming rights money to be coming in...they can make a nice stack of $$$ that way

Sanchez stopped hitting a couple weeks ago. Good news is that catcher Nick Forte is starting to hit. Sure could use catching help. Do you realize that the Marlin catchers have now allowed runs to score on pitches that got by them in three consecutive games? That has to be a record.

      • Mattingly said that the Dickerson caught stealing was a hit and run and Isan didn’t swing. It’s like Isan really doesn’t want to be in the majors.

Sanchez wasn’t going to have a 1.500 OPS all year hate to break it to you.

And I would guess that’s not even close to the record.

it's a combination of bad luck and injuries. Tonight we hit the ball hard with RISP several times, just happened to be right at the rockies OF. for the year, I think its more due to injuries and the fact that for a majority of the season, due to injuries, the bottom of our lineup is fundamentally incapable of producing anything offensively. It's tough to score runs consistently even with a good top of the order when you have a 6 or 7-9 in the order being awful offensively. Combos of Berti, Leon/Wallach, Diaz, Sierra, Harrison, Brinson, etc plus the pitchers spot. It's so hard to get anything offensively when that is the bottom of the lineup.

Plus the injuries to Sixto and Elieser have made it impossible to go on a consistent run even with 3 ace level performances so far in the rotation. That to me is the main reason we haven't been able to get anything going for a sustained period. Just so hard to overcome. Next year if Sixto is healthy and they promote max meyer..... look out. Plus Bleday should be up next year along with Sanchez.

It's annoying to say but realistically next year is the year to expect to contend if we can stay healthy, but this year could have been that as well if we can just get healthy.

            • enough of Diaz btw. It's one thing to struggle with the bat, but he has been awful on the basepaths and his IQ is awful from what he's showed. Devers isn't ready but if one of those guys is gonna play id prefer devers at 2b. He has no power yet and might never be a power guy, but he puts the ball in play, has speed, and plays good defense.

              • This won't happen, but once they get Cabrera's pitch count built up in his rehab starts, I might think about sending him directly to the majors.

I'm selfish and I get not rushing him, but the fan in me wishes max meyer would get promoted the second any service time implications for the future are over and just have him develop at the major league level, because while he obviously wont be 100% ready, I think he is a major league caliber SP already and I think he will be ready by opening day next year. If we can get him 7-10 starts down the stretch while avoiding any service time issues and have him work through any lumps that he will take at the ML level, I think it will be incredibly beneficial to our chances next year. Imagine a rotation of Rogers, Sandy, Sixto, Pablo, and Meyer with all of them already having ML experience. That is must see TV (or at least watchable TV) every night.

I've watched a couple starts each from these guys. Max Meyer has looked great and only I think improved his prospect status.

                    Jake Eder has looked better.

ya max meyer has looked incredibly filthy. his slider is so good he will be a dominant closer at the very least. but if he fulfills his potential with sixto getting healthy, that rotation could be really ridiculous and one of the better ones in recent memory for a 2-3 year sustained period

If we can somehow get to Opening Day 2022 with Alcantara, Rogers, Lopez, Sixto, Cabrera, Meyer and Eder all healthy We're going to be set-up for all 7 guys to get significant Major League Experience and then maybe make a blockbuster trade for a game changing bat at the deadline.

ya. I thought they could compete this year if they were healthy but that does not appear to be coming to fruition due mostly to injuries, though its still early and they arent that far back. Next year with hopefully Bleday and Jesus ready, another year of experience for Jazz, some sort of catcher upgrade, Dickerson sent to Japan, Cooper shipped to an AL team wrapped in bubble wrap, BA not a mess, and a healthy rotation.... look out.

I'm not giving up on this year yet, but I think it's clear to me that making some huge roster altering move at the 2021 deadline, unless it's for a catcher you believe will be the guy for the next 5-6 years, is probably not the smartest move at this point.

I would like to keep all 7, and pay for better hitters.

Obviously we're going to have to spend money, but I can't imagine a scenario where the best Free Agent Bat available is coming to us, let alone more than one elite bat is coming to us in free agency. I think it's pretty clear that handing out a $200 million contract to a player is something that we're just not going to do. So how do you acquire a player who's going to come in and immediately be your best player? It's gotta be through a trade.
