  • This is pretty simple.

Instead of trading for Wil Myers contract to add another prospect who might or might not be good, why not just sign Yasiel Puig and improve the 2020 product both on and off the field? Not that he’d be great defensively in CF either, but, honestly, who cares? He’d be an upgrade offensively and might improve attendance a bit.

    • Do we need anymore damn outfielders? Just let this group figure it out. Myers is owed too much and for too many years to be a useful kind of salary add on to add more prospects. Let this group figure it out, wait till the kids come up in July, and then reassess the situation next pffseason

If you can sign Puig for 1 year, why not?

Because you aren't trying to win in 2020. You're trying to win in 2021 and beyond.

Not that signing Puig would be a bad move, but #1 priority should be putting together a playoff caliber roster after 2020.

I'd do it for sure since there is no interest.

            And still trade for Myers.

Puig can help us in 2021 with an asset he'd bring back at the trade deadline. Sergio Romo got us Lewin Diaz.

I agree. I'm not against signing Puig. Like lou said, why not do both?

                • Has anyone read a word about Humberto Mejia? He was Edward Cabrera great last year (albeit w/o reaching AA yet) but gets no respect by the prospect ranking "authorities." ZiPS didn't even list his name ... and their Marlin list was a mile long.

I'm baffled by how lightly he is taken (although the Marlins did add him to the 40-man).

We go over this all the time Lee - it's because he doesn't throw hard and is more of a control specialist. Those guys carve up the lower minors. The men become boys in AA (or if you are a hitter in the Marlins system, Jupiter). Some of them break through (Neidert), most of them don't. Go look at Yusmiero Petit's minor league career with the Mets. He should have been Greg Maddux, but just turned into a reliever. Although his late career has been fantastic.

Fangraphs discussed him also - Mejia turns 23 in March and he’s only thrown 23 innings above Low-A, but he has a riding fastball with plus-plus vertical movement and a viable curveball, so the Marlins added him to their 40-man. He needs to locate his fastball at the top of the zone more often and should be a fine middle reliever if that — and a velo boost out of the bullpen — occurs.

                    We'll see what happens.

Their true payroll is probably around $67-68 right now.

Let's trade Rojas to the White Sox (he's perfect for them) along with Cooper (also perfect) AND Urena (also perfect), and take back like Zack Collins and another FV40 prospect or two. What do they care, they have Grandal/McCann and Collins whiffs a ton and is a longterm piece for a non-contender and maybe he works out. He gives some longterm backup hope and can stash in AAA. That gets payroll to $60ish. This clears two 40 man spot. Everyone is happy.

Then it's sending San Diego nothing for W. Myers, $20 million (I'll say spread out $5-$10-$5), Morejon/Weathers, O. Miller, and a topical FV40 guy who is a 40 man casualty for them next year. Morejon is on the 40 man. This adds two 40 man spots if it's him, so Marlins are even right now. Myers increases payroll $15, so you're around $75.

Puig can't cost a lot. Call it $10 at this point? Marlins are around $85 million. They need to DFA/trade one guy. Bye Wallach.

                      Alfaro, Cervelli
                      Aguilar
                      Isan
                      Villar, Berti
                      Anderson
                      Dickerson, Ramirez
                      Myers, Sierra
                      Puig, Joyce
40 man AAA/AA - Brinson (yep he's still here), Z. Collins, L. Diaz, M. Harrison, J. Sanchez, Jazz. No one needs any rush.

They should probably replace Sierra/Joyce with another middle infield option, but that's about it. Who cares if you lose Sierra at this point as your OF depth is insane.

That team is objectively..... good? They would really hit.

And an entire rotation is in AAA/AA on the 40 man - Sixto, Morejon, Cabrera, Neidert, Guzman

                      - - - - - - - - - -

That is how you inspire confidence

                      - - - - - - - - - -

                      2021
                      Lewin replaces Aguilar
                      Monte replaces Joyce
                      Collins replaces Cervelli
                      Brinson/J. Sanchez replaces Puig
Jazz/O.Miller (other Padres guy) replaces "the Sierra IF replacement" eventually

                      I like my idea

                          • 1-0 Marlins in the 1st. Harrison opposite field single. Then stole 2nd and 3rd. Cooper knocked him in with a single. Brinson hit a ball that was probably a homer on most days but the wind knocked it down.

                            - - - - - - - - - -

Harrison botches a catch in the sun.

Bleday misplays a ball in the wind. 2-1 Mets. Yamamoto hasn't retired anybody yet.

Harold Ramirez hits a bomb. 3-2 Mets.

Bleday laces a single off a lefty.

Wallach hits one that is probably a homer on most days as well but it goes down as a sac fly. 3-3.

                              Jazz with a single.

Lewin Diaz will be the best defensive first baseman since DLee when he comes up hes very good.
