If they do that, they should wait 11 days into the season. Based on the schedule, let the 5th starter be a "bullpen day" two times through and then insert Neidert as a 5th starter.

You're accepting super 2 status, but gain a year of eligibility. I am more apt to doing that with pitchers (who fall apart) versus positing players.

This also goes for Guzman, Sixto, and Cabrera, although that extra year may be more important as these guys may have top of the rotation potential.

I hate to always be the service time guy, but it's important. They always have to abide by smart service time policy because when it matters with every 10th player, you make a lot of money by securing the year of control.

• I dont disagree with you lou, I'm just not convinced the FO is putting as much emphasis on service time as you are.

Loria did not give a shit for sure. Calling up Fernandez opening day was egregious beyond anything I've seen in baseball.

But I think the new guys have a better idea of what's going on. It's tough to read with more middling players, but they navigated Garcia, Hernandez, Riddle, and Brinson's service time last year to deflect super 2 status. I don't think it was a coincidence, so I'm buying into them paying attention.

• if it only takes 11 days for neidert to get an extra year, which ill give the benefit of the doubt to in the calculation, it makes no sense to have him make the opening day roster. In that case roll with urena or elieser and if you really want to bring him up after 2 AAA starts. that's not at all egregious or crazy given neidert's minor league season next year.

I just looked, it's a 187 day league calendar.

So it's 16 days for Neidert (Sixto, Guzman, Cabrera, Lewin, Jazz, Monte, and Sanchez) for an extra year of service time. That's April 11th. That's assuming the league calendar begins on opening day which I'm not sure of. So give/take a few days.

Being a super 2 would be annoying, but a 7th year of control would not be. It's a no brainer.

I still think I'm waiting until the Super 2 deadline though. I'm fine with:

Sandy, Caleb, Pablo, Yamamoto, Hernandez/Urena
Stanek, Steckenrider, Yimi, Sharp, Urena/Brigham
Garcia, Conley, Quijada
Next up AAA - The other of Hernandez/Brigham and Dugger

Even better if they sign another veteran pitcher on a 1 year deal.

• lou, what do you do for a living and why isn't the answer "work in a baseball front office?"

(serious question)

• Austin dean dfa. Lee stone is gonna be apoplectic. Reality is he can’t play center, corner outfield and outfield in general is crowded for us and he is a aaaa type player. He’ll probably catch on somewhere as a 4th or 5th outfielder for a few years

• Who is that making room for?

I would've dropped Moran before Dean, and I think Dean ends up having a better major league career than Brinson, but I get why Dean gets the axe before Brinson.

Probably Cervelli. Still no clue why or how Moran and Wallach are on the 40 man BUT Dean is not a surprise. No real value but maybe 2 AL teams want a shot and send us something?

He’s not good.

He’s a -1.0 war for his career, he’s 26, and he’s a bad defender.

• There are worse players on the roster though

• He doesn’t walk, doesn’t hit for average, and doesn’t hit for power.

In terms of outfielders, dickerson is better, as is Anderson If they choose to play him in the outfield, as is cooper, as is villar, and brinson and Sierra still have promise and will get another chance to start the year and monte isn’t far off

• I will say this for Dean, he was constantly up and down from AAA to the majors last year, and when he was up it was never consistent playing time. A lot of pinch-hitting, could never get into a groove. He'd go back down to AAA and absolutely mash. Finally gets some consistent play in September and ends up with an .823 OPS for the month. I don't think there is a big difference between him and Harold Ramirez, the difference was Harold made a better first impression. I think Dean ends up on some major league team's bench for quite a while.
