The Athletic ran an article yesterday about how it’s “changing the rhythm” of our pitching staff because they can’t develop a rapport with him: https://theathletic.com/861708/2019/...itching-staff/
add to it that we signed Wilkin Castillo and I have a feeling this is one of those Marlins trademark minor injuries that will result in him playing 22 games all seasonOriginally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.

Encouraging Sign: After Trevor Richards fired 5 shutout innings against the #Mets today, @Marlins rotation candidates Richards, Sandy Alcantara and Pablo Lopez have combined to post a 1.84 ERA with a .149 opponents average and 36 strikeouts in 34 1/3 Grapefruit League innings.

Alcantara, Lopez, and Richards all NEED to be in the rotation to start the year. Give Chen the long relief role and let smith get a few weeks to a month rehabbing some more and by the time he is ready he will likely have a spot to fill given that injuries/ineffective performance are always likely.
I really like those 3 guys though and its interesting they are all very different pitchers. Also, I keep hearing how our guys have added velocity this spring but i really think thats mostly just the radar guns in the spring training stadiums.

They could also go to a 6 man rotation and keep Urena and Straily on normal schedule, and then map out everyone else's time skipping someone's start every fourth cycle through. It would really keep innings down and they could probably, again, maneuver guys up and down (as Lopez, Richards, and Alcantara all have options, not sure on Ca. Smith but I think so) and basically perpetually be carrying 4 SP and use option rules to gain an "extra" player.
I could totally map this out for them via excel. For instance, Marlins need a 5th SP April 1st for the first time.
urena
straily
3rd
4th
april 1 - 5th SP
April 2 - Urena, send down 5th SP and call up anyone
3 - Straily
4 - off
5 - "3rd"
6 - "4th"
7 - Urena normal rest
8 - off
9 - Straily extra rest
10 - "3rd" extra rest
11 - "4th" extra rest
12 - Urena normal rest AND send down 4th SP for 10 days
13 - "5th" SP - bring them back
14 - Straily normal rest
15 - "3rd" normal rest
16 - "6th" SP - move in 6th SP AND send down 3rd SP for 10 days
17 - Urena normal rest
18 - off
19 - "5th" extra rest
20 - Straily extra rest
21 - "6th" normal rest
22 - off
23 - Call back up 4th SP - 4th SP normal rest
24- Urena extra rest
25 - "5th" normal rest
26 - Straily normal rest
27 - "6th" normal rest
28 - "4th" SP or "3rd" SP calling back up - normal rest
off
29 - Reassess and start the scheme over again and keep the cycle going
That's basically throwing March/April
Urena - 6
Straily - 6
3rd - 4
4th - 4
5th - 4
6th - 3
They can legit have an "extra player" April 2nd-April 28 just by maneuvering the starts like this
They should absolutely do this.

yes, they can effectively roster 4 SP on the roster by perpetually sending down two of the "4" kid SP, plus having Chen in the bullpen. The only issue is what is the personal toll on this of moving up and down versus sitting in the dugout. This works on paper, but not sure about the personality aspect. I'd still do it and tell them up front its going to be a weird year but they want to give them all innings. It could level out in the summer anyways once its clear someone shouldnt be starting.
They could really do it but they'll have to adjust on the fly throughout the season every 10-15 days. I mean, I could do this in less than an hour every week and project the next 3 weeks and deal with injuries as they happen.
This basically solves the not enough guys on the bench issue as they basically keep flipping their 5th SP into another bench bat sort of thing, and they just keep grinding relievers all year.
