Has he played in the field yet this spring? I know a couple different games he's been DH.

I believe he has just because i saw a picture of him in an article wearing the new uniform and catching a ball in a game.

how did he even grade out defensively last year? The bat was so bad no one ever focused on his defensive ability

I think this has been discussed, and he was below average defensively. Not by a lot. Not his scouting report in the minors. Projection systems think he'll be better this year. He was incredible in the field with a small 100 inning sample size in 2017 FWIW.

I think it's fair to say hitting .170 for 10 weeks will carry into the field. He gets a 2 month mulligan for me, but I think he'll be positive out there. Hopefully Max Kepler level positive and then the Marlins are in real business. He hits .240 with real power and plays Kepler defense, he's a 2.5+ WAR starter easy even if he never gets the walk rate back up.

Maybe not incredible, but the trajectory was to "really above average" if he got more innings. I have real hope here he's a poor man's Mike Cameron/BJ Upton.

i think bj/melvin/bj upton at his peak with a little less speed but more pure power is a pretty good comparisom

Alcantara 3.2 scoreless innings, 3 k's, and 1 hit, but 4 walks. He's obviously got to reduce the walks to reach a top of the rotation guy level but his stuff is so good he can work around it a lot of the time and he makes guys super uncomfortable. If he can gradually improve the control he really is a big piece for the future.

O'Brien was 0-3 with 2 Ks today. I know it is still just spring training, but you cannot count on that guy to be your starting RF based on what he has shown thus far. Maybe you give it another week, but there has to come a point when they go looking for another starting OF.

The season is getting close. IMO it’s time for Marlins to reconsider RF. I want to see Garrett Cooper every day, and give him as many ABs as possible until cut day.

Cooper is definitely having a better spring than O'Brien, which isn't saying much. You'd have to think he's got the upper-hand on the job at the moment. Hopefully they are exploring other OF options though.

Austin Dean should be in that mix IMO.

He's got an option so I think you give O'Brien a month. He was good in September and that's an easy change.

                        Alfaro, Wallach
                        Walker, Prado
                        Castro
                        Riddle, Rojas
                        Anderson
                        Granderson
                        Brinson
                        O'Brien, Cooper

I'm fine with this, and broken record #37 - DFA Prado for a CF holy shit

I would think Dean is a lock to start in LF at this point.

Granderson is going to be starting. Either in RF if they go with Dean or LF if they go with O'Brien/Cooper.

Brinson went 1/3, 2K against Syndergaard. Take that all day.

Neil Walker also took Noah and Lugo deep, so here's hoping for that FV45+ prospect come July.

O'Brien 0/3, 3K. He's definitely playing himself off the team.
