To quote The Wolf from Pulp Fiction, let’s not start sucking each other’s dicks just yet.

The Rays did way better than the Marlins did last year in average household viewing.

So if our next tv deal starts in 2020, when does that get negotiated/agreed to? Because I think the closer to 2020 it gets negotiated i think it might help us slightly if some of the dividends from the trades/rebuild start showing promise of turning the corner. Probably not a significant difference, but maybe hints of promise + increased fan support due to those hints of promise might make a little bit of a difference i think. I could be completely wrong on that though I dont know how any of that shit works.

Our deal expires after 2020, so I'd imagine work would begin next year

The Marlins were 26th in baseball last year in TV ratings. They had the second largest drop in viewership behind Detroit.

Oh shit its after 2020 rather than after 2019 and then new contract for the 2020 year? I was off by a year. I wonder how much it would make a difference if just for the sake of argument our farm system looks like the braves does now or something similar.

You continue to live in a fantasy world. Our farm will be what it is, as long as Michael Hill continues in any capacity other than janitor with the Marlins

Yikes. I'm sure it won't look much better this year either. But I guess after than it can only go up? Maybe? hehe.

Well, two consecutive 100+ loss seasons may kill off the fanbase completely, not just attendance but on TV/Radio as well. I don't think they've hit rock-bottom yet.

How are they selling any advertising with those numbers? Must be gonna give a lot of 2 for 1 sales. Unless I was getting a deal like that I wouldn't bother, as the audience reach is too small.

I think that the TV networks know that ratings are cyclical. I remember articles a few years ago about how low the Astros ratings were.

I also think that they know that rock bottom ratings is still thousands of households per night watching Fox Sports Florida where the alternative is what? Fishing shows or re-runs of FS1 programs that will get next to no viewers? Live sports programming is valuable. Even if the Marlins are at an all time low in ratings, that's still worth at least double their current deal based on the going market rates. Plus, even if the Marlins are bad, they still have Mets, Phillies, and other opposing teams fans living here watching locally. I think that is the reason the Rays deal is so high...they get 19 game a year with Yankees, Red Sox, and Orioles transplanted fans watching and Fox Sports knows it.

That's why I argued for keeping everything together/adding pitching and see what happens, and then you retool from below, but we're past that point now. And we already only have about 3 advertisers that you see every break - the "we are part of your world" Toyota guy, that mojo la lechonera sauce whatever it was stuff, and the marlins themselves.

That makes sense, and is a good thing to think about in all this.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one! They do the same jingle/lady for Subaru of Pembroke Pines too.

That's the "we are part of your world" guy from the West Kendall Toyota dealership that I mentioned. I see him on buses around town too.
