I'll go with the organization's philosophy since 2005: Sign a couple FAs and see what sticks during the season.

Jones, Borowski and perhaps even Gregg weren't the early season favorites going into their respective seasons.

Not sure I'd go multi-year with NJ, given his checkered past with injury. He hasn't done much this year to show that's changed.

EDIT: Hm, I thought he had a DL trip earlier in the year with WAS. So just the one trip this year. Still not sure I'd go multi-year. I'm not convinced he's even on the radar to be re-signed, either.

To add to our pain, Philly lost again today, so we could have picked up another game. Ugh.

Only way I would be in favor of locking up Johnson for two years is with a games played clause that kicks in after 125ish games.

Or if he could provide the sheen of professionalism of a Wes Helms.

At least we winned the series.

I don't disagree that he's probably not on the radar to be re-signed, and his injury history is troubling. But when he's healthy he's such an asset to the lineup, and there's built-in insurance in the form of Logan Morrison and Gaby (which I suppose is an argument for dumping him, since the organization has other guys who can play first, but Logan can play LF if he busts out at AAA and Gaby's probably best used as a platoon guy off the bench anyway)

You implied todays loss has nothing to do with why we're not a playoff team. I don't agree (and I'm also implying we don't have a playoff calibre manager).

The worst team in baseball scored 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth against us.

Now, keeping in mind just how huge this game was, Zimmerman got served a bigger meatball than the ones they serve down the street at Bela Cera.

I'm not saying, "oh look, see, we suck because a team came back and beat us". I'm saying, "playoff teams don't lose these games in September vs WAS".

I think there is a difference. Would you agree?

I like your glass half full mentality but unfortunately winning a series against the Nationals in September when were down a handful of games in the WC chase doesn't cut it.

I disagree with you Daft. Are you saying the Phillies arent a playoff caliber team because they just got swept by a worse Houston team?

The Phillies are cruising into the playoffs. We aren't.

They still have a lot to play for. Best record in the NL and homefield in the playoffs and I dont think they want to enter losing a couple of series.

It's the start of September, a team with as huge a cushion as the Phillies can take series off without hitting the panic button.

A team that has to leapfrog at least 2 teams cannot drop games they had in hand.

So they shouldnt be concerned that they've scored 20 runs in their last 10 games? Whether your in or your not, you can't say a playoff caliber team doesnt lose games like this.

Shit happens. Even Mariano Rivera blows a save. You can't say this one game is the reason they arent playoff caliber because when the Phillies 1 or 2 to the Nats next week they sure as hell will be playoff caliber.

I didn't say this one game was the reason.

I said it was one of the reasons.
