in all fairness though:

we've had 2 championship teams in south Florida and both times attendance was poor until the playoffs rolled around. In 1997 we were 11th in attendance (and obviously only 28 teams back then). In 2003 we were 28th (!). Last year we all know that despite the stadium and the spending spree we didn't sell out a single game, and if you were at opening day you know that there were 100s of open seats. So if you're Loria and you see this, you can either spend a lot of money and make some money, or spend waaaaaaay less money and make a little less money. The ROI on spending money in this market hasn't made sense and that's why we've had 3 owners who haven't done it. If you spend an extra 60 million, you don't make an extra 60 million. It's worth it to him, since money is the priority, to spend significantly less and turn a profit that's only slightly smaller. I totally get it. I really do.

The only reason there were empty seats on Opening Night is because the Marlins were holding the seats for last minute season ticket buyers. Not some failure of the market to purchase tickets. The lottery for Opening had tens of thousands of people on it.

Henry is the only owner who legitimately never had the opportunity to spend money to make money because of economic reasons. Wayne just gave up on MLB in general and Loria decided to give up on spending money three months into the first season in a ballpark.

The Heat have a bigger fanbase than the Marlins (even before the LeBron thing). That shouldn't be the case.
