The more I think about it, the more I see it going down this way:
-Selig "approves" the trade publicly, says Marlins got good baseball value and understands the motives
-Selig "privately" tells Loria the team needs to spend more money and try to sign FAs or they'll face fines and lawsuits and possible forced sale of the team
-Loria and Co. let it "leak accidentally" that they are being forced to spend more money
-The team signs 2 mid-level FAs, keeps Nolasco at least until the deadline, and has at least one high profile whiff ("We TRIED to sign Bourn/Pagan/Melky!")
-Team extends Stanton by June and says "Look, we're spending money on the right players!"
