Marlins Trade Everyone to Toronto, Receive lifetime supply of Maple Syrup
Lou I just saw on the MLB Networrk scroll, as of right now, the Marlins have $20.2 million in contracts committed to 5 starters right now.
It's tragic. If Selig allows this trade, it will be obvious he cares nothing (which we already suspected) about baseball in South Florida.
Well Nolasco has $11.5
Escobar $5
Money to Toronto - $4
Heath Bell $4
Ozzie $2.5
Mathis $ 1.5 < - he actually has $1.5 on 2014 payroll too lol
Dobbs $1.5
Turner $1
Cox $1
Webb $1 (arbitration projection)
$33
Brantly, Morrison, Hechavarria, Solano, Ruggiano, Stanton, Alvarez, Eovaldi, Hand (let's throw him as the 5), Cishek, LeBlanc, Dunn, Jennins, Ramos, and let's put Petersen/Gorkys and a club controlled reliever. All of that, is $8 million
$41, for 22 players and Ozzie. Missing 3 bats (or 2 bats if you put Cox on 25 man)
The fans are not going to come Erick. Maybe this is your youthful exuberance showing and not having really lived through 98 or fully got 05 while it was happening, but this is the third epic meltdown of the franchise in 15 years. And this time there is no world series ring AND a new stadium that taxpayers predominantly paid for.
It's over with this ownership. If this is Loria making the team more attractive to sell to a new owner, so he can say "nothing is on the books, do what you will," cool, I get that. But if these guys stick around, no one is going to support them. Not even if they sign 4 premium free agents in 2 years. No one will believe they will be around.
There is no confidence left. No one is going to believe or trust them. Not now, not ever. It's over until they sell.
No shit.
My point was, were the fans going to come if the Marlins had kept these 5 players? They didn't come last year when the 5 players were still on the team and the team was losing.
And it is over with this ownership, I agree. It's over because the 2012 experiment was a massive failure, not because they made this trade.
Fans will be upset with the trade for awhile, but at the end of the day, what ultimately makes fans upset is the team losing. When they start winning again, they'll pretend like they were diehard fans all along, so who cares?
They had a firesale in '98 AFTER winning a World Series. Fans came back when it was exciting in '03 because of the winning. Pretty sure they'll comeback again whenever they start winning. At least this time it's a firesale of a shitty team.
Fans came back but the Marlins drew 16k a game the year they won a World Series. 22k the proceeding year. The 1997-98 fire sale severely scared this franchise and this one will do the same. Loria and Samson have written themselves off with Miami fans.
Well if you want to make a baseball argument, all the important minor leaguers should be MLB ready or 1-2 years of experience already by 2015. Stanton will be in his 2nd arbitration year. Sign him for 6-7 years, you theoretically have a team that is amazingly cheap and club controlled the duration of that contract, and if they are interested in running a league average $90 million payroll by 2015, could probably add 3-4 high impact free agents and not have it change anything with "who they got already."
Of course, 225 losses are coming 2013-2014, but hey the Tigers did that a few years ago and they are good now?
