Posturing. Use Marlins front office insanity against them.
He has probably maxed over Cargo with all the bombs this year in limited ABs though. This is probably pushing into 7/$85-90 territory. Which I find completely reasonable. Marlins should offer $80, Stanton says $100, meet in middle. This is an easy one. Loria just needs to put up.
That includes 3 free agency years. If he doesn't get injured, he probably makes over $50 just in the arbitration years (10-17-23 or whatever. Its gonna be brutal). Certainly a $25 million a year player as a 26 year old in free agency so you can do the math on savings here. Stanton isn't walking away from $90. No way in hell. I don't care how much you like LA, thats so much money and eliminates all future injury risk. He can go there when he is 29.

Also, I'd imagine they'd sit him down and give him the run down of what the 3-5 year plan is. I'm sure it looks good on paper and that alleviates all insanity front office issues. I mean, I can spout off about Yelich, Fernandez, were keeping Reyes and Buerhle, we're gonna get a 3B for JJ, we are lowering payroll in 2013 to use it in 2014/2015 and we'll have all star game revenue too. I mean, there is plenty they can sell here to fix the "Gil Velazquez" issue.
Bottom line is pay the man

Also I'd like to add, I would have an incredibly hard time being a Marlins fan with this ownership/front office group if they don't lock up Stanton. Shit like JJ, Solano penned into starting next year, not reinvesting the Hanley payroll, etc sucks but is arguable to be better as the team is more than 1 or 2 players away right now. But Stanton. There is no argument to be made he is not a Trout/Harper centerpiece and a future # 1 player on a playoff team, if he isn't already that.
Pay the man

The posts around here are getting very funny. It was just last year that everyone was on the front office's bandwagon for its offseason haul.

If anyone heard Samson with LeBatard a few weeks ago ("I still don't know why his agent hasn't called") it's overly obvious they still haven't learned a thing from Cabrera. Every day that goes by Stanton is more valuable than he was the day before. A 26 year old Stanton (recurring knee injury withstanding) has a very real chance to be baseball's first $300 million player if you think he still has room to grow and that his ability to hit for (relatively) high average isn't a mirage.
What's going to be great is when they lowball him a la Cabrera and then wonder what gives. I don't blame him either, this is a shit team in a shit market in a crappy stadium (yeah the amenities are great, but the dimensions produce slap fight baseball, and that sucks). Maybe security is great, but if you can keep your eye on 2014 you have an unprecedented payday waiting for you (while cleaning up in arbitration).
--------------------
Put this another way, use lou's $50 mil arby schedule, and let's go super conservative and say he'll get $250 mil as a FA in20142017 (when he'll be 26). So a 26 year old Giancarlo has, theoretically, $300 million waiting for him, and on a much better team. Makes it a lot easier to turn down the $90 million, which the Marlins won't offer anyway.

He takes 7/$90. He would be an idiot to risk a major injury in 2013 and 2014 which could dent into his Arb2/3. With his history, no way. The allure of free agency dollars and what Prince did is nice, but at the end of the day a market level contract that does not prevent the player from becoming a free agent 28-30 for a 2nd massive pay day is a no brain decision for the player. Miami certainly has some front office issues, but that isn't going to determine this. This was a bad year, they all know it. And like I said, there is enough to sell about future player potential and open payroll to convince any player on paper things will be alright.
It's really simple. Pay the man.
