I'm not going to speak for Stanton, but an 8 figure payday pretty much eliminates the "he needs to plan for life after baseball or if something goes wrong" argument for opting against the buyout, does it not? Other than that, I really don't get the argument for buying out free agent years (which is the Marlins goal, I'd assume). I think a player like Stanton - who's going to earn huge money early in arbitration - is different than most, and when you talk about something that different, conventional logic doesn't apply.

How many people in baseball history can even say they had that kind of money in the first year arby/super-2? I can only think of Howard. Cabrera didn't get it, Lincecum didn't get it, and going further back there's no way you'd get to 8 figures in year one.

So, my point can be summarized as this. Stanton's going to be making out just fine after his first arbitration payday. He knows this, his agent knows this. Stanton maybe doesn't like it here. I don't think anyone blames him. Because of the money coming his way in arbitration (and we're talking first year arbitration here, not third year) and his age at prospective free-agency, there exists almost no incentive to sign an extension that forfeits free-agent years.

We can all agree that Stanton's arbitration schedule figures to be historic, correct?

Go watch "Broke," one of the new ESPN 30 for 30. A first year arbitration award, even in the 8 figures, is not "Set for life" money for most professional athletes.

Are you telling me that a guy with a high school education (and likely a sub-3.0 GPA) might not be able to take care of his finances appropriately? No way.

I wouldn't go that far. Ryan Howard is still better statistically (and look at those RBIs arbitrators!), but the fact that Stanton is almost comparable to him says a lot. I would expect $10 in year 1 because of "inflation." If he bombs 50 next year, maybe $13ish. That is an insane arb1 figure either way and something to avoid with a deal.

But end of the day to your main point, a $10-13 mil tender in arb year one is a lot different than $90 million right now. It's a no brainer even if the hypothetical massive pay day is coming in 2-3 years coupled with can re-enter free agency in prime.

He was a Stanford recruit, so his grades were probably fairly decent. Unless Stanford is no better when it comes to big $ college athletics than any other school.

A a general rule of thumb, I take unconfirmed reports from "sources" with a big ol' boulder of salt.

Doubly so when they come from Dan LeBatard, who has not been a reporter in a long time and has not really earned the benefit of the doubt as a reporter with sources worth trusting.

Can anyone remember Dan LeBatard breaking a news story?

This strikes me as much to do about nothing.

Remember all of the reports that JJ was never going to sign with the Marlins?

Did LeBatard say Randy Shannon will 100% not be the Hurricanes head coach like 20 mins before it was announced that he was going to be the head coach?

That's too big of a risk. If he's offered 90 million, chances are he's accepting.

Even if he doesn't want to play for this franchise he will accept the 90 mil and just bank on being traded before the contract is up.
