Adalberto Mondesi was traded to the Red Sox for Josh Taylor and Boston is also getting a PTBNL. Ideally, I'd like to see the Marlins go after someone better, but if the alternative is to keep the roster the way it is, a guy like Modesi who was once seen as having some upside, but has seen his value fall, but is still young, is exactly the type of player they should be going after. There's obviously a lot of injury history with Mondesi, specifically, but these are the guys you take a chance on when you don't have money to spend, and have a depleted farm system.

I see superstars as somewhere in the top 10-15 players in the league, and Reynolds is probably somewhere in the late 20's-30's. I agree that they shouldn't horde prospects, and should go after guys like that (assuming an extension is also coming), but I also think there has to be a cutoff point, because value is still value, and if the ask is too high, you should be able to use that value elsewhere. It's too bad they didn't pull the trigger on him in previous years because many of those prospects have probably lost value, but I think there's also an argument there for using what you have when the value is high maybe moreso than the idea that it would be ok to overpay now. Because of all of this, Eury would be a non-starter for me in a Reynolds deal, especially if he's going out with other top prospects. I could probably get on board with sending a package of damn near anyone else in the system, though, if you're also extending Reynolds.
All I know is I'd be pretty happy if the top 4 Marlins hitters were projected as 38th (Reynolds, 51st (Jazz), 56th (Arraez), and 65 (Rosario), and every one of those guys can scale up big time. We shall see.

They signed Devin Smeltzer - https://www.fangraphs.com/players/de...ats?position=P
This is a really nice "innings eater" signing. 70 IP, 3.71 ERA, 1.22 whip last year MLB level. Analytics suggest he was pretty lucky though. This fills a "Neidert" void (still not sure why they got rid of him) and is a solid nice depth signing. He could be an adequate injury replacement to get to Eury/Eder/Sixto in the summer.
This helps move the needle of do they have another pitching trade in them. This is the kind of depth they need and is smart. Hope they can pitch mix him like Thompson.

His career OBP is .280. He is as one trick of a pony as it gets in that he has speed. that's about it. If they could have gotten him for nothing sure, but he doesnt really bring much to the table. His value/fame was more from a fantasy perspective, not real life.

Again, my preference would be something better, but if we're talking about status quo or adding a player like this, I'd easily prefer adding a player like this. Also, I think the notion that he doesn't bring much to the table, or that his value was just from a fantasy prospective isn't fair. This was a 2.5 WAR player in consecutive seasons in 2018 and 2019. If you get him for free, and he doesn't stay healthy, or regain that form, what does it cost you? It doesn't necessarily have to be Mondesi, but this is the type of player they should be looking at. .Last edited by fish16; 01-24-2023, 03:34 PM.

Holloway is the righty tanner scott with worse stuff. that guy had no idea where the ball was going when it left his hand. I never got the buzz for him as he was coming up through the minors. He had 0 control.
Neidert felt like he never got a great shot. He never really struck any guys out at the major league level with just 28 k's in 49 innings, but he was never really given an extended look. It felt like he was a guy who should have gotten a bigger look out of the bullpen to see if he could be another one of those guys who couldnt cut it as a 6 inning starter but whose stuff played up out of the bullpen. Given some of the other guys we kept like tommy nance, it felt like neidert should have stuck around.

Not sure if it's true, but this article mentions that the Marlins could potentially be up for sale soon.
It is uncertain whether such a record MLB bid would have materialized. The Washington Nationals have not found a buyer despite being up for sale since April. The Baltimore Orioles and Miami Marlins could go up for sale soon, according to MLB sources who declined to be identified, and the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays have yet to secure the new ballpark that each team has sought for more than a decade.
We need a Cohen-type owner that's willing to eat losses and spend a ton and give people a reason to come out to the park. Attendance will follow that investment (and hopefully associated on-field success), which is something that Sherman & Co failed to realize, and/or can't do.
We all know the only reason Sherman got the team was because of the Jeter association. Otherwise he wouldn't have been in contention.

I'd have kept Nance over Neidert though, but then we get back to Brazoban and move to Villalobos/Soriano who were very unlikely to be Rule V selections and lost outright, etc. Seems like there was some room here. Poteet looked pretty good.
