I will say, let them announce the 5/$55+option or 6/$75 extension and this does make more sense as the surplus value of including a real premium prospect makes more sense if you get those free agency years. That would fill the gap so to speak where I will care much less. Basically, be the Braves as you say. This is a Sean Murphy extension moment for sure. Hopefully this was pre-negotiated as to why the Marlins would do such an overpay here.

Prospect capital is something we're going to need in any potential Reynolds deal. As sad as the bunch is, he was our #1 hitting prospect. #3 prospect on FanGraphs. When you don't have money, prospects are your money if you're looking to win.

Is this really me and fish16 vs everyone else on this one??
But as said, the extension would cure all sins here in a vacuum. Getting this guy on 5 year + option and we can have the unison fist pumps.
I'd try and sign Wacha next here, and then move the earth and stars for Reynolds/Bednar, based on a Rogers/Luzardo/Cabrera and Meyer package. Go for it.

Like I said, at this point it’s more likely he never plays in the majors than it is he becomes an above average regular.. In the context of where this team is right now, it’s the right move. Also no need to extend him currently. Extend jazz and the young pitchers early. Play out Arraez for a year

On the other hand, you can only make the deals that are out there, and they badly needed to trade a pitcher for a bat. I didn't like that they couldn't pull the trigger last offseason because they were hording prospects, or that they couldn't get a Pablo trade done at the deadline. Well, this deal bucks both of those. While it appeared that Pablo's value should have been higher, I think this proves it just wasn't as high as people thought. If they could have gotten more for him, they would have.
So now the question is what's next. I think it would go a long way towards building trust in the organization if they extend him. But also, this cannot be the only move they make for a bat. Your lineup still isn't good enough unless you get huge bounce back seasons from Garcia and Soler, while also seeing continued development and a healthy season from Jazz. So what are you going to do for that CF bat? Can you land Reynolds without giving up someone from your current rotation, because if you have to trade another starter, you might be ok, but also are playing with fire. If the ask on Reynolds continues to be too high, where else do you go for a CF?
EDIT: Also, while it's the Marlins so we all know he'll probably turn into a .250 hitter, logic would tell you the spacious outfield in Miami should actually help him.Last edited by sports24/7; 01-20-2023, 05:00 PM.
