The Rays dumped him after his .299 OBP and 86 OPS during the second half of 2021 season. He rewarded the Marlins with a .297 OBP and the same 86 OPS for 2023, He is consistently unacceptable and most likely won't get any younger. The team has to try to get better.

Same goes for the similarly paid Miguel Rojas.
Wendle had a 1.2 WAR in 371 PA and Rojas 1.2 WAR in 507 PA. These guys are solid with their positional flexibility. $5m is a fine price for that. They'd get more in free agency or another guaranteed year or two.

They problem with them and the Marlins is they should be CLEAR BACKUPS and not even platoon starters. Wendle's 371 PA is a perfect amount. If one fills out their bench with four 1+ WAR players, that's an awesome bench.

I do think Fortes/Stallings, Rojas/Wendle, Berti/Groshans/LeBlanc, Sanchez/DLC/other LF could produce this off the bench. Especially since C, 3B, and LF are likely platoons so the short side guy will have a few extra PA.

The problem is not that they don't have a collection of pretty solid guys. The problem is there is no OOMPH production at the top with Jazz. They need 2-3 pretty big upgrades at the top, but guys 5-18 in the position core are going to be pretty solid IMO.

    • Here's a deal for Alcantara that would instantly put three big bats in the lineup: Bichette, T Hernandez, A, Kirk, Biggio and S Garcia. Not my creation, but from the trade values website for those who are interested. [URL="https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trades/?team_filter=511"]Trades

Right, they ought to be utility players off the bench that get spot starts for giving guys days off, not total starters.

Who made this? Baseball writer Eel Enots?

            • I encourage anyone who thinks that Berti and Wendle are not good bench pieces in 2023 to make an appointment for a CT scan of the brain as soon as possible.

                • They released Luke Williams and he was picked up by.... The Dodgers. He has options and is pretty OK for who he is. Why???

                  Fortes, Stallings, Henry
                  Cooper, Lewin
                  Jazz, Berti
                  Rojas, Wendle, Devers
                  Anderson, Groshans, LeBlanc
                  Bleday, DLC, Sanchez, Burdick
                  _____
                  Garcia, Jerar
                  Soler

=20..... and Lewin (OOO), Devers, and at least one of Cooper/Anderson/Rojas/Wendle/Berti got to go and likely two. And it's not like they need the 5 kid outfielders. One can go easily in a trade,

Even with bringing in multiple guys, there is space here.

Likely nothing longterm, but this is perplexing.

                  • As expected, Wendle's option was declined, but he can be retained via arbitration.

Cody Poteet, Jordan Holloway, and Bryan Hoeing have been outrighted.

Luke Williams was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers.

They seem to like getting rid of somewhat useful guys, while keeping ones that should've been gone.

He may not have survived the offseason, but for present purposes? I suppose their idea is, we can always find a backup 13th position player so let's shoot for upside today. But still.

Poteet also is weird. Just carry him for now and 60 day DL him? You're not that deep. But I guess he cleared waivers so it's fine.

                        • Obviously Poteet needs to stay healthy, but if he does. I think he’ll have a pretty lengthy career in the bigs.

                            It's really bad.

Just wait till Lee realizes you can trade for Fernando Tatis with Pablo, Eury, and I. Lewis.

the issue is their lack of moves will make them start most days, not bench players. of course they are quality bench options, the issue is they will get 400 ab's+

                              • I thought the Marlins made a mistake by not trading Pablo Lopez at the deadline. If he ends up being the best SP available during the offseason, which some are speculating might be the case, maybe the Marlins will be proven right to wait. They still have to prove they can get a deal across the line, though.
