        • Bleday went deep as well. Good start, for the two top hitting prospects. So much of this rebuild is riding on those two guys' shoulders.

          • as it relates to cooper, id urge patience until at least the end of spring. Worst case scenario, you have an .800 ops bat off the bench every night who can fill in at 3 positions in LF, RF, and 1b if there is an injury. We've gone so long without depth because of how idiotically loria built the team that we don't realize its ok to have a surplus of good players.

Plus, these things tend to play themselves out by the end of spring. People get injured, whether its our team or other teams. Id guess that by the end of spring cooper either has a starting job here or a starting job opens up elsewhere due to injury and his value increases. I for one don't understand why he isn't considered the favorite to start over aguilar. Cooper when healthy is a better player. Id give him the everyday job and have aguilar as the top hitter off the bench each night in a big spot. Either way, I don't get why some are considering this mismanagement to have a surplus of good players. If a good player has to come off the bench or doesn't start every day, that means you're doing something right from a team building perspective. If he had this huge value on the trade market, that would be one thing, but its clear he doesn't and its ok to have too many good players to give playing time to. I'd take a backup plan of a clearly good hitter in Cooper as depth in case of injury over whatever decent bullpen arm he would get us.

Especially after you saw how many different seasons were derailed due to injuries in the previous ownership group. We couldn't sustain a single injury to a yelich, stanton, ozna, Jose for a single month, now we have the depth to sustain multiple injuries and not completely fall apart. That is how a good organization builds a team in a small market.

            • also, i think Jazz and Sixto finish 1-2 in rookie of the year.

Totally agree with what you're saying on depth. I just don't know if I like Cooper outside of being a 1B/DH.

I don't think he's terrible in a corner outfield spot. I'd definitely have him as starting 1b though and aguilar as primary bench bat

I have no problem with the depth. My thing is, if something were to happen to 1 of those 2 guys, I feel like Lewin can step up and be the 1B.

Technically, I agree with you and I wouldn’t mind seeing a Lewin/Cooper platoon at 1B, but I don’t mind if they like Aguilar more than Coop, I guess. Aguilar isn’t really a platoon guy though if they were to do that with him. He’s hit righties better than lefties.

I guess it’s a good “problem” to have.

ya I guess I can see both sides. I like Cooper as the better bat but given aguilar's lack of positional versatility it might make sense to give him the everyday role and start him like 4/6 game a week, give cooper the other 2 and then have cooper give dickerson/duvall a rest other days. that way you get cooper in the lineup at least 3 to 4 times a week, you don't move aguilar from his only position, and even in the days you don't start cooper you have him as a pretty amazing bench bat. As far as lewin, I love his potential but I like making guys prove success at the highest levels of the minors before counting on them, especially after such a huge lost year of development for so many guys.

When you do that you don't leave yourself vulnerable to counting on unproven prospects or and if the worst issue is that you have a surplus of good bats, that's a good problem to have. So many years we put all our eggs in a basket of shit at different positions and had no depth to speak of when the pieces flamed out (i.e. latos, Mike Morse, and so many others). This is why you build depth, it's a long season and you need to expect unexpected injuries and down years.

If Cooper hits as expected I really see Dickerson being traded mid season 100%. We're gonna have some very interesting decisions to make come the middle of the year once we see a few months more of development from monte, Brinson, Lewin, Bleday, Sanchez, etc.

We're in great position to make a 4 for 1 or 5 for 2 swap with prospects here in the next year for a star level piece. Very interested to see who comes on the market in the next few months that has 3+ years of team control or a relatively cheap contract. I've been riding this train all off season but they need to use their scouts to identify a great C either just getting to the big leagues or soon to get there and do what it takes to get them. We have a long term piece at quite literally every single other position on the field.

                      • pitching has been dynamite so far in the first 3 games. I really think barring an injury to any of the rotation arms and the bullpen being more consistent with the added depth that we could be a surprise playoff team, although I'm not at all expecting that. If they upgraded and got contreras i would be pretty confident but I'm worried about the bottom of that lineup if alfaro is still 8th and then jazz or isan struggle. We desperately needed that DH.

                        • braxton garrett sitting 91-93 today apparenty after his fastest pitch being 91.3 last year. Still walked 3 guys but we needed to see that, he isn't a major league pitcher sitting in the upper 80's. Might have just been due to the weird schedule.

                          • Watched bits and pieces of the game. Almost nothing happened. Ended 0-0. Garrett's command was not good. Bleday did make a really nice throw from the warning track to 1st base to double up a guy.

                            • Nola/Heineman Watch. Former Marlin system catchers are in San Diego and St. Louis. Since being cut loose by Miami, Nola has a .289 and .359 start in the bigs. Off to a 2-5 start this spring as the projected starter for the Padres. Heineman starred for the Cardinals yesterday, killing two potential Marlin rallies by throwing out Berti and Marte on attempted steals. He also drew a walk to start the seventh for the Cards.

Was the auto balls and strikes system in use for Marlin games the last couple days?

None of the Marlin pitchers has looked particularly sharp the last three days. Good fortune and great defense have prevailed.
