  • Leonys Martin and other still could probably be a strong package for JJ. Sometimes you got to realize that your player doesn't have the value you thought they did a year ago. JJ isn't the same pitcher he was back when he was untouchable. Now the hope has to be he has a strong finish to the season and he can be moved in the winter.

The Marlins did the right thing. They asked for Olt in any kind of JJ deal all the way until the end. Say what you want, the Marlins handled these negotiations with Johnson and the Rangers properly. It seems the Rangers are simply playing hardball with both us and the Rays (if you want a top notch pitcher, you need to be willing to give up a top notch prospect, plain and simple).
Ya I agree but once Texas made it clear that Olt was off, they could have easily started looking at other guys. Texas system is not like most in the majors, they have TONS of talent.Beinfest messed up by trading Dominguez for Lee(Even tho Dominguez would have been nothing more than a stopgap when we traded Hanley)then to make up for it he tried to get Olt.

The fact is JJ is gone after next year and at best we are a 80-85 win team. We could have lowered the price, got a ML Ready arm(Grimm) plus other stuff to help us play for 2014 plus get more cash.Instead we will get less if we trade him at the Winter Meetings and even less if we wait till next year(unless he becomes unhittable)

      • We already have major league ready arms in LeBlanc, Hand and even maybe Koehler. I am OK with keeping JJ in this situation.

Exactly Texas would have more than likely done Martin,Grimm and 2 other prospects for JJ and us paying off the rest of this year's salary

But Beinfest was so focused on Olt,he kept saying unless Olt is on the table we have nothing to talk about

          • I'm not interested in dealing JJ just to deal him. No Olt, fuck off.

            • Yep, I'm kind of hoping the Marlins end up keeping JJ

HAHA I guess,we will just have to wait and see what they get for him either at Winter Meetings or next year's deadline.Doubtful it will be Olt then either

                • I dunno, the Brewers got Segura who was their top prospect for Greinke.

                  • Marlins shouldn't just keep JJ, but extend him. If anything, this is the worst he'll ever pitch, might as well see how he feels about tacking another 2-3 years on that deal.

Does he really walk away from 3/$33 right now? Assuming no crazy $ distribution, the team can probably shed that contract (since they'll look to eventually, it's the Marlins) and JJ still hits FA as a 32 year old. Absolute worst case scenario for JJ, he can say that baseball guaranteed him $65ish million for his entire career (assuming he's "done" at 32).

Doing so probably also dispels some of the skepticism around this team (though that probably won't go away).

                      Okay.

Anyway you ignored me last time I asked you a question.

Josh Johnson will not be traded, source says.
And just to end any speculation

I don't think JJ would sign for 2014-2016 each year at a lower annual value then 12-13.

Not that an extra $2+ means much if team is running $100 mil payroll, but I think your number is 3/$40. And that still may be really worth it. He's better than that when healthy by a lot.

As long as the AAV of the prorated contract is less than $15 million, I don't think it will be difficult to say a baseball team of normal sensibilities will not find that to be onerous for a pitcher of Johnson's frame, age, and actual or perceived ability.

If we were bigger on the national scene we'd so be getting trashed right now for not maximizing value in a wasted season.

Hearing Arizona asked about JJ last night but were told Matt Davidson,Tyler Skaggs plus another prospect which they said NO

So he was still available just no one could meet the price
