Leonys Martin and other still could probably be a strong package for JJ. Sometimes you got to realize that your player doesn't have the value you thought they did a year ago. JJ isn't the same pitcher he was back when he was untouchable. Now the hope has to be he has a strong finish to the season and he can be moved in the winter.

The Marlins did the right thing. They asked for Olt in any kind of JJ deal all the way until the end. Say what you want, the Marlins handled these negotiations with Johnson and the Rangers properly. It seems the Rangers are simply playing hardball with both us and the Rays (if you want a top notch pitcher, you need to be willing to give up a top notch prospect, plain and simple).
The fact is JJ is gone after next year and at best we are a 80-85 win team. We could have lowered the price, got a ML Ready arm(Grimm) plus other stuff to help us play for 2014 plus get more cash.Instead we will get less if we trade him at the Winter Meetings and even less if we wait till next year(unless he becomes unhittable)

But Beinfest was so focused on Olt,he kept saying unless Olt is on the table we have nothing to talk about

Marlins shouldn't just keep JJ, but extend him. If anything, this is the worst he'll ever pitch, might as well see how he feels about tacking another 2-3 years on that deal.
Does he really walk away from 3/$33 right now? Assuming no crazy $ distribution, the team can probably shed that contract (since they'll look to eventually, it's the Marlins) and JJ still hits FA as a 32 year old. Absolute worst case scenario for JJ, he can say that baseball guaranteed him $65ish million for his entire career (assuming he's "done" at 32).
Doing so probably also dispels some of the skepticism around this team (though that probably won't go away).

Not that an extra $2+ means much if team is running $100 mil payroll, but I think your number is 3/$40. And that still may be really worth it. He's better than that when healthy by a lot.
