Jayson Stark: Marlins Expected to Keep Josh Johnson
I think that if the Rangers do not get JJ, the Bluejays will. I do not see the Bluejays holding out for us to lower the price. They'll pay what we want.
I wonder if the Jays would let us choose between D'arnaud and Lawrie + pitching Spects.
D'arnaud is a tough case because I think he's out for the season.
The Rangers, having lost out on Zack Greinke, are still talking to clubs. But the Rangers don’t appear to high on Josh Johnson, the Marlins right-hander who is available in the Miami fire sale.
The Rangers have a high regard for Johnson’s makeup and character. He scores well in that regard.
But there are some other concerns, according to sources. His health has been tenuous through his career and this season his home/road splits have been drastic. He has a 3.35 ERA at home and a 5.48 ERA on the road.
It’s hard to imagine the Rangers not doing anything before Tuesday. But it doesn’t appear they are willing to sacrifice their best Minor League prospects for what’s still out there on the market.
ARLINGTON — Had the Rangers been willing to give up a Mike Olt or Martin Perez, it’s possible they could have had Zack Greinke on a two- or three-month lease by Friday night. That they weren’t tells you all you really need to know about general manager Jon Daniels’ approach.
It’s not about avenging Nelson Cruz’s misplayed ball in Game 6 of the World Series last year or the back-to-back World Series losses. It’s about a bigger picture and a higher goal. Whether it’s this deadline, this season or the next decade, Daniels’ goal is to build the Rangers into a championship franchise, not a one-time champion.
Oh, it doesn’t mean the Rangers won’t discuss Olt — the Rangers are extremely good at keeping their trade secrets just that — but they certainly wouldn’t discuss him for a rental player. It doesn’t mean they will discuss him for anybody else, either. Now that division rival Los Angeles has plucked Greinke by giving up a major league-ready shortstop (Jean Segura), the Rangers must at least re-evaluate their position.
The Miami Marlins, conducting their biennial fire sale, very much like Olt, too. In Josh Johnson, they have a potential No. 1 pitcher available. Johnson is signed through next year at $13.75 million, which by all accounts would make him an absolute bargain as an ace.
If the Rangers trade Olt for Johnson, it would be as much about next year as this year. While he has the potential to be a No. 1 pitcher, there is a huge difference between a No. 1 and a potential No. 1. Johnson was on the way to being the real thing until shoulder inflammation last year and has taken a step back since then. That’s not uncommon for pitchers in the first year back from an arm injury. The second year is when they usually bloom again.
When the Rangers have seen him this year, Johnson has looked a “little restricted” in his delivery, which could signal more shoulder issues. Or it could simply be typical of ongoing recovery. His average fastball has dipped about 2 mph to 93 since the surgery. As a result, the Rangers have leaned toward thinking he’s not the guy he once was.
That said, Johnson made his best start of the season Monday, limiting Atlanta to one hit in six innings and striking out nine. His fastball was right around 93 mph. His other three pitches netted him 13 swings and misses. It was an encouraging start, to say the least.
Had Greinke ended up in Chicago or Atlanta, Johnson’s start would have been looked at just like that, an encouraging outing and nothing else. With Johnson scheduled to start again Sunday and Greinke on his way to Los Angeles, the Rangers must spend Saturday re-evaluating that start. Was it just one night? Did it signal the return of Johnson? Is he worth more to the Rangers now than he was 24 hours earlier?
Daniels declined to comment on how the trade might affect the Rangers’ approach to the Tuesday afternoon deadline. He knows the Angels were good. He knows they are better now.
That’s why the questions must be pondered. For the first time since the Rangers rose as an AL power in 2010, a division rival has fired the first major volley in the middle of a pennant race. In 2010, when Los Angeles added Dan Haren, it came three weeks after the Rangers had pulled off the Cliff Lee trade. In 2011, the Rangers strengthened their bullpen as the deadline approached. The Angels had no answers.
In each of the last two years, the move was about improving the Rangers’ perceived glaring weakness.
The weakness this year is the lack of a true ace to pitch Game 1 of a playoff series.
There is still somebody out there who can fill that role in Josh Johnson.
Whether the Rangers trade for him or not, it will be about keeping the future as bright as the present.
Most of the article talks about the Rangers considering JJ and if he's worth the price.

Source: RHPs Grimm, Buckel top pieces in #Rangers’ Greinke offer. #Brewers valued SS (Segura) and to walk away from that need wanted Perez.
Rangers never offered Olt to Brewers.

Well the price has been set by the Greinke deal. So for JJ we will be asking for a Top Prospect plus 3 other prospects. Yes 4 total and the logic behind Beinfest asking for that is Greinke cost 3 and he is a FA after this season,JJ has 1 more year left.
Some news has come out about Texas and while they did not get Greinke is was because #1 they did not want just a rental and #2 Milwaukee wanted a SS(Profar) who Texas would only consider trading for a Lee. Now about JJ and his injury concerns,Texas still likes him alot however they want to get him for alot less than Beinfest wants. They could still try to get him,it would cost MIKE OLT and 3 other prospects(However not Perez,Martin or another top one)the prospects would be Buckel,Alfaro,Garcia
Toronto has the prospects to make a move if they want him but Brett Lawrie will NOT be dealt. Deal would look like Gose,Nicolino and more

They actually asked for Profar,Grimm,Buckel which is what they wanted(MI and 2 arms which they got from LAA) and Texas responding with unless he says he will discuss signing an extension with us we won't even offer a Top Prospect. Then made a counter of Grimm and Buckel for the rental which the Brewers said BYE

Some saying that Marlins want more for Johnson than Brewers got for Greinke. One rival official: "I think Zack has a Cy Young at his house."

My gut reaction: If Rangers weren't willing to give up Olt for Johnson before, Angels trade should not make them any more willing to do so.

As of early Saturday afternoon, the Marlins are open-minded about dealing Josh Johnson. They'll weigh the offers and make their choices.
The sleeper team might be the Boston Red Sox,they want a SP bad and might be willing to meet our price especially since it dropped some with the Greinke deal
Even tho we would be asking for 4 prospects now,it would be either Barnes or Bradley and NOT both
But Toronto is still interested and if Baltimore would include Machado or Bundy they would be in it as well
