He is their best prospect and probably big-league ready already. If we're not getting a teams' best prospect, I see no reason why we should trade Josh Johnson. The Marlins should be in the driver's seat in these negotiations. We DON'T HAVE TO trade these guys.

We aren't good with catchers right now. We are bad-average. What catchers do we have anywhere in our system that are good??? D'Arnaud is an elite catching prospect who would have a good chance to solidify a position we have been trying to solidify for how long now??

It's about 2013. As long as he's ready for next year, that's all that matters.

The bottom line is that we should not be searching for quantity for the sake of making a trade with Josh Johnson.

JJ is under contract next year and has the upside of being the leader of our staff.

The only way we should trade him is if we get overwhelmed. He's not untouchable like most players aren't untouchable, but he's still very valuable.
And since we're negotiating with a team in desperate need of pitching, we have all the leverage right now. There's no reason to settle.

The Blue Jays have some nice pitching prospects, but if those are the best players you're getting in this deal, you're settling and sending the wrong message to the fanbase.

Last night, Beinfest said it was a "restructuring." If we trade JJ to the Blue Jays and the best piece coming back is a guy like Syndergaard, you're getting another nice pitching prospect but you're also basically having a firesale at that point.

On top of the fact that they're nice prospects, one of the main reasons we made the trade with Detroit is because all three of those guys (at least the first two, especially) are close to big-league ready (some people have said they're big league ready now). The Blue Jays top pitching prospects are in A ball right now.

It's d'Arnaud + or no deal. Simple as that. That's for JJ; I would guess Hanley's value is lower than JJ's right now so that's a bit different.

                  • I don't think you move Hanley or Johnson unless you get a longterm rotation candidate, at least Turner level, ready for 2013, among other pieces. Younger "play soon" 2B/3B/RP would be nice.

Restructing, not rebuilding. I don't care how good a guy in A ball 2+ years away is. The team could still morph quickly into a contender, and they have to keep momentum with the new park even if the casuals think they are jackasses. Make the right trade or don't do it.

Ya but wouldn't Gose be ready at the start of 2013? Play him in CF and move Boner to 2B. I agree that if u trade JJ u need arms but like alot have said on here most of there good ones are in A Ball.

Then say turn Hanley into Green/Peacock or another arm?

                      Comment

                      • I could be wrong about him but Gose is probably still a raw prospect at this point. I think those are better trades to make if you're trying to rebuild and start from scratch again. We don't really need to do that. Neither one of those trades = great, overwhelming value. Again, we don't have to make trades.

I don't even like the Hanley trade at all actually. Don't see the big deal about Grant Green, really. A 24-year old in the PCL putting up a .768 .OPS. Terrible K/BB rates.

                        • I would say no "centerpiece" CF for Hanley or Johnson. They are in free agency this offseason (unlike basically every other position in the field comparative to what Marlins have), and they have money (especially if they trade either of two or Nolasco/Bell). Now if it's Choate for Bourjos, by all means. Trade the lower guy for a CF and then figure out what to do later with FA dollars or whatever, but it has to be a now/April 2013 SP centerpiece for Hanley or especially Johnson. Rotation comes first when there is a longterm core of Reyes, Stanton, Morrison, Yelich, a very high probable FA CF coming in, and I guess Brantly/Realmuto in place. Can never have enough pitching. Fernandez blows arm out, James ends up sucking, Conley to pen, and Heaney is 3 years away.... just like that no depth. And that's not out of the realm of possibility.

Arms, arms and more arms. Great first step with Turner.

This is very true, but I think compared to current team assets tripling up on catcher prospects is a little overkill with Buck still signed through 2013, and two "alright" guys. There's always next year's deadline.

Full on "arms or keep them."
