          Good article.

          • That article actually sucks in my opinion. I disagree with its premise.

            • Free speech?

              • I have no problem with an organization punishing a high profile employee for comments that could potentially harm said organization.

That's not a free speech issue imo.

If he was being threatened with jail time/criminal punishment is a free speech issue.

                Employment is not a right.

                • He lacks a filter, which journalists love until lack of such leads to speech that we disagree with; then we become raging hypocrites about how he needs to zip and shut.
This was a pretty prescient point in the column.

                  That's about it though.

                  • Ozzie has to be free to say he loves Castro, and it is up to us to fight those entities — government or business or other — seeking to censor him.

It is not because we agree with the speech. It is because to do anything else is to say we no longer believe in the foundation on which it stands.
Oh, ok, so corporations have a duty to act in defense of an employee's right to free speech--a right that is enforceable only against the government, mind you--even if it means they all but ensure their insolvency in the process?

What was that? Our CEO wore a swastika armband to work today and opened the board meeting by yelling "Heil Hitler"? Oh well, we can't do anything about that. He has a right to free speech. And we have a duty to defend it. Guess we might as well go ahead and file for bankruptcy.

If the more salient point is that society should be more tolerant of divergent viewpoints, I agree with her. But to say that the Marlins were out of line in how they responded to the concerns of their customer base is ludicrous. They're a profit-driven organization, not a policy-instituting, norm-enforcing body.

That private organizations have an even greater duty to protect free speech than does the government. In no way, shape or form is this a free speech issue.

At least the writer understands that this speech is not protected. What really irritates me is that there are tons of idiots claiming that Ozzie's right to free speech has been violated. Those people are probably the same type of people that think all discrimination is bad.

Out of curiosity, what types of discrimination are you in favor of?

                            How about an example?

The reason why tr305 did not go to Harvard with CC is that Harvard discriminates in its selection process.

See where I'm going with this? The term 'discrimination' gets a bad rap due to automatic association with unfair and illegal discrimination. I'd think most people who can't understand the text of the First Amendment surely can't distinguish between good and bad discrimination.

                            • I don't think you're using discrimination correctly. Discrimination is thought of negatively because it has a negative denotation.

discrimination - treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit

                              • You're handpicking one part of one definition. I can do the same.

the process by which two stimuli differing in some aspect are responded to differently
