Ozzie Guillen Suspended for 5 Games for Comments Regarding Fidel Castro
Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has made the news again.
In an online Time Magazine article, Guillen, a native of Venezuela, said that he loved Fidel Castro.
"I respect Fidel Castro," Guillen was quoted as saying. " You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that mother****** is still here."
The Miami Marlins released a statement Friday in response to the article.
"We are aware of the article," said a spokeswoman for the baseball team."There is nothing to respect about Fidel Casto. He is a brutal dictator who has caused unthinkable pain for more than 50 years. We live in a community filled with victims of this dictatorship and the people in Cuba continue to suffer today."
Guillen, who was called "the most unfiltered figure in baseball" in the article, joined the Marlins in September after former manager Jack McKeon retired.
The team recently underwent a makeover, which included new players, new uniforms and a new stadium in the heart of a large Cuban community.
Guillen recently got attention when he said that he gets drunk after every away game, win or lose.
"I get drunk because I'm happy we win or I get drunk because I'm very sad and disturbed because we lose," Guillen was quoted as saying by CBS Sports.
A group of Cuban-American demonstrators plans to boycott the Miami Marlins as a result of manager Ozzie Guillen's comment that he respects Fidel Castro.
Vigilia Mambisa, headed by Miguel Saavedra, said it plans to begin a caravan of cars at SW 36th Avenue and 8th Street Tuesday that will culminate in front of the ballpark.
Guillen's comment was published in an online Time Magazine article.
"I love Fidel Castro," Guillen was quoted as saying. "I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that mother****** is still here."
The team manager issued an apology Saturday, one that came after a statement from the Marlins that said that Castro is a "brutal dictator" and has "caused unthinkable pain," according to a
"I will apologize if I hurt somebody's feelings, or I hurt somebody's thought," Guillen said. "I want them to know I'm against everything 100 percent — I repeat it again — the way this man (been) treating people for the last 60 years."
Vigilia Mambisa said they will boycott the Marlins until Guillen steps down, and will demonstrate to show its rejection of the manager's comments.
The group describes themselves as a "hard-line, right wing, anti-Castro, anti-communist group," according to their Facebook page.
Sure didn't take Ozzie long to put his foot in his mouth. Who had less than one week into the regular season in the over/under pool?
Guillen in trouble with Miamians after his alltime idiotic comments
By Jon Heyman | Baseball Insider
MIAMI -- In the past new Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen mostly just annoyed his opponents and occasionally his bosses with his well-known motor mouth. But this time, he has found himself real trouble. Guillen, who should know better, who has to know better, is quoted in a Time Magazine article due out soon saying nice things about Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
Guillen actually uses the words "love'' and "respect'' regarding Castro, though he did call Castro an "expletive.'' So far the "expletive'' comment isn't mitigating the idiocy involved in the other words here, though, nor should it..
You can say just about anything in Miami, but not that. And Guillen, a longtime resident of Miami, has to know that Castro is the biggest villain to a large percentage of Miamians. So not only was Guillen dead wrong about what he said - Castro is a well-known monster not to be loved or respected at all -- but it's just plain idiotic to praise him.
The Marlins have issued this statement. "We are aware of the article. There is nothing to respect about Fidel Castro. He is a brutal dictator who has caused unthinkablepain for more than fifty years. we live in a community filled with victims of this dictatorshuip and the people in Cuba continue to suffer today.''
The Marlins say they do not plan to discipline Guillen. This country was built on free speech, so a case could be made that he shouldn't be punished. But perhaps he does need to be fitted for a muzzle (or at least told to keep his comments to DP combos and the like for the time being).
Miamians are not taking it well. There may be a boycott, which is the last thing Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria needs at their new stadium. Loria spent nearly $200 million on new free agents and another $10 million on Guillen, filling their beautiful new ballpark with exciting figures. Guillen was supposed to be a lure. At the moment, he is a distraction. Guillen apaolgized, but not everyone is satisfied.
Judge for youself. Here is the quote that's made its way onto the internet from Guillen: "I love Fidel Castro ... I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last sixty years but that (expletive) is still there.''
The one thing Guillen got right is this: Castro is an expletive. Other than that, this is the dumbest paragraph uttered by a major-league manager in the history of paragraphs and managers.
How does one say he "loves'' Castro? It's unfathomable. Castro has presided over executions, has kept political prisoners and he's forced tens of thousands to flee their families and homeland. If anyone should know this, it's a baseball figure, If anyone else should know this, it's a Miamian. Guillen is both.
Guillen probably survives this idiocy. But maybe just barely.
