A bottom third team would absolutely take Volstad to try and 'fix' him for a $2.5 and relatively nothing in trade. Worth a gamble, but as we're talking Oakland I don't think they would have innings to throw at him with Cahill, Anderson, Braden, McCarthy, and Moscoso, let alone their own prospects, assuming they move Gio. Yea some of them are injury risks but they aren't trading for the backup plan. But for Volstad, they can get at least a middle of the road young reliever more than likely.

I also can't see anything less than Morrison, Dominguez/Coghlan/Ozuna, Cishek/Ceda, and a minor league arm (excluding only James) in a four player deal for Gio. Maybe the Marlins recoup a 2nd nominal player back, but it's going to be a lot for a young ace no matter how good Morrison is. There's not going to be any sneaky trade here. Gio is good and Beane has a history of trading top starters. Oakland would have to take a foursome like that pretty seriously.

I'd also do that because I don't care about Dominguez/Coghlan/Ozuna or Dunn/Cishek/Ceda because this team can replace a potential average starting players and 3rd RHP arm out of the pen. Morrison and club controlled replaceable parts for Gio. Sounds good to me both ways.

Doing something like that trade, signing Buerhle/Edwin/180+ innings, Reyes, keeping "Oviedo" and Badenhop (which makes the pen Oviedo, Mujica, Dunn, Choate, Webb, Badenhop, Cishek/Ceda which is totally fine), and getting two veteran platoon/bench bats who can moonlight in LF, is a really good offseason.

The Marlins clearly would like to add a left-hander the caliber of Oakland’s Gio Gonzalez.

The team has expressed interest in Gonzalez, but the Marlins aren’t convinced the A’s are willing to part with an All-Star who will not be eligible to become a free agent until 2016.

Oakland is looking for a large return for Gonzalez.

Miami is willing to part with top prospects and big league experience talent to upgrade their rotation.

The general feeling around the team is they will try to add two experienced starters to their rotation. Gonzalez and Tampa Bay’s James Shields are on the Marlins’ radar.

The club also has interest in free agent Mark Buehrle.

While there hasn’t been much publicity on C.J. Wilson and the Marlins, don’t discount Miami making a push for the lefty if they don’t sign Buehrle.

From Samson and Lorias perspective, no.

hate to lose Lomo but if you can get a young number 2 type pitcher that is a lefty? you move him.

If we could get him Reyes, Vasquez back then I think it is a pretty successful offseason

Doesn't he dislike Ozzie? Seems to me that if you're on the fence and you don't like Ozzie, there's no way you play for him one last time.

The Marlins have pursued trades and free agents aggressively so far this offseason. Most recently, Gio Gonzalez has emerged as a possible trade target for the team. Here are the details on the Marlins’ offseason, via Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald:

                    * The A’s have demanded a package containing Logan Morrison or Mike Stanton for Gonzalez and the Marlins “flatly rejected” the possibility.

How do they expect to get him without Morrison being part of it?
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

So they're supposedly willing to trade LoMo for Shields, but not Gio? I guess we have to wait til later in the off-season to see if the Fish bite.

I don't think they're willing to trade Logan for Shields. If they were, I'd imagine that would have been done already.

I can imagine the Marlins offering "the moon" of James, Yelich and Dominguez and truly feeling that is good enough. I don't entirely disagree, either. Club controlled players, especially someone like Logan who is going to hang around for an extra season because of the 2010 call up time, are worth a hell of a lot to any team, including the incumbent club. If you have to shed payroll, get younger, do a 3:1, we're not here to help you out. That's a great mentality to have. The Marlins clearly are trying to do the "all in" philosophy with 2012 and I don't know if counting on Coghlan or Peterson is part of that, no matter how good a fit Gio may be for us and Logan may be for Oakland.

Lot of buzz Monday about the Marlins’ interest in Gio Gonzalez. Sounds like the Athletics are willing to listen, but aren’t all that motivated to tradeI suck.the lefty starter, whoI suck.is a productI suck.of Miami Monsignor Pace.

San Francisco Chronicle Athletics beat writer Susan SlusserI suck.offered some good perspective on where the Athletics stand with Gonzalez and closer Andrew Bailey, who also has drawn plenty of interest. It appears the Athletics want to see if someone will blow out their farm system for Gonzalez. Slusser said the Athletics would want nothing less than a haul comparable to the one they received from the Diamondbacks for Dan Haren in December 2007. The Athletics, who also traded reliever Connor Robertson (nine big league innings) in that deal, got back Brett Anderson, Chris Carter, Aaron Cunningham, DanaI suck.Eveland, Carlos Gonzalez and Greg Smith.

About two weeks before the trade, Baseball America released it’s top 10 Diamondbacks prospects. Gonzalez was atop the list. LHP Anderson was No. 3. OF Cunningham was No. 7 and 1B Carter was No. 8.

Part of why the Athletics’I suck. are even listening on Gonzalez is he’s arbitration eligible for the first time.I suck.He is not signed to a long-term dealI suck.and his salary will start exploding from here on out. The Athletics likely don’t want to take back players in the same situationI suck.for Gonzalez, so I doubt they would have interest in Gaby Sanchez, who is arb eligible after 2012. They might ask for Logan Morrison (arb eligible after 2013)I suck.to spin him to another team for more prospects.

The Marlins might actually be a good trade partner because their best prospects are in the lower levels of the minors. By the time guys like Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna, Chad James, J.T. RealmutoI suck.and Noah Perio start coming into their own, the Atheltics’ might be ready to compete again. Obviously, the Athletics also have to like the Marlins’ prospects.

How many of the aforementioned players is Gonzalez worth? He just turned 26 in September and is coming off a 16-win season. He’s also posted ERAs of 3.23 and 3.12 each of the last two years, respectively. Haren was a year older, but like Gonzalez was coming off his firstI suck.All-Star season, when theI suck.Athletics traded him.
