  • Gio Gonzalez: Now a Washington Natinal

We’ve heard the Marlins connected with all manner of free agents. But how a trade rumor? Here’s one: Miami is talking with the Athletics about Gio Gonzalez

David Villavicencio is the man with this report, and he says that sources close to Gonzalez are telling him that the two teams are talking trade for the lefty. It’s not clear from the report that a deal is imminent, but Villavicencio reports that three different players have been discussed as potential pieces for the deal and that all three ”played significant time with the Marlins last season.” Not all three would be part of a potential trade.

Such a trade would make all kinds of sense for everyone involved. The A’s are — as always — looking to get a lot of talent in return for someone they soon won’t be able to afford, and Gonzalez is worth a boatload on the trade market right now. Meanwhile the Marlins, despite playing footsie with Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes, really need starting pitching, and Gonzalez would upgrade the rotation in major fashion.

Oh, and let us not forget: the Marlins are all about building a strong local brand, and Gonzalez is a Miami native.

Stay tuned to this one. Because even if the Marlins aren’t ready to pull the trigger on this, there are any number of teams who would like to get in on the Athletics selling off their best pitcher.
Report: The Marlins are talking to the A’s about Gio Gonzalez
    --------------------
The Marlins are on the verge of upgrading their starting rotation.

A source close to Gio Gonzalez reports the Miami native could be joining his hometown team soon.

The 26-year-old is coming off the best season of his young career. Gonzalez won 16 games and struck out 197 batters while posting a 3 .12 ERA and representing the Oakland A’s in the All-Star Game. He has won 31 games and struck out 368 over the past two seasons with Oakland.

Gonzalez would be interested in joining his hometown team if a trade can be agreed on between Oakland and the Marlins. The left-hander is hoping for an extension should he get moved to another team and the Marlins appear to be interested. He will not become a free agent until 2016.

Upgrading their rotation is a priority for the Marlins and they have been connected to several pitchers this off-season. The Marlins hosted free agent Mark Buehrle last week and have been rumored to have interest in Gonzalez and Tampa Bay’s James Shields.

Adding Gonzalez would give the Marlins a formidable duo at the top of their rotation. Ace right-hander Josh Johnson and Gonzalez would form a tandem that would rank behind only Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain and Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter in the National League.

But adding a player like Gonzalez comes at a price. The lefty is young, performing at a very high level, affordable and under team control through 2015. A’s general manager Billy Beane could expect to get a nice package in return for the left-hander. He is also certain to receive plenty of calls from fellow GMs should word get out that Oakland is actively looking to move him.

The source says three different players have been discussed as potential pieces for the deal. All three players played significant time with the Marlins last season. It is unlikely that all three would be involved in the deal.

I heard Coghlan, as one of the names, from a little "birdie".

JJ, Anibal, Nolasco, Gio, Buerhle would be a rotation worthy of song.

And then whoever replaces JJ for 3 months of the season.

        As is tradition.

Not sure how they could get GIo without involving Morrison.

That's what I'm thinking. It would suck to get rid of LoMo though, but the A's seem to want ML ready players.

I would want ML ready talent for Gio too. The A's are operating under the same window the Marlins were in circa 2008. It looks like ground breaking on a new ballpark will happen in the spring.

I'm guessing they would move LoMo for Gio pushing bonifacio into a starting position and going hard after Cespedes. Also assuming that they eventually sign Reyes under this scenario as well.

I would have to imagine that this is a wait and see trade. The Marlins need to see who, if anyone, signs with them before pulling the trigger on this.
This is a Dolphins town, though.

I really like Gio, I'm fine with the idea of LoMo for Gio, but I'd really much prefer that we see how free agency shakes out first. Not that such a strategy is a luxury we have because of all the teams (theoretically) interested in Gio, but I don't know if we're that much better of a team if Petersen-Bonifacio-Stanton is our OF and Gio is the lone rotation addition.

RT @JimBowdenESPNxm: Olney reporting Reds are talking to A's about closer Andrew Bailey. A's source confirms their interest in Alonso.

Looks like the A's could get their 1st basemen through Bailey. Unless they view LoMo as an OF'er, then I'm guessing this could eliminate Gaby/LoMo. They could also use one as DH.

There is no way the Reds would trade a guy under club control for 6 seasons and profiles to be real good for a damaged reliever.

anyway, getting Gio for anything less than LoMo would be awesome but I expect it to be for LoMo.

don't know why the A's would have any interest in Chris Coghlan

A quick take on the story Craig relayed earlier. I thought the last paragragh of David Villavicencio’s piece on a possible Gio Gonzalez-to-Florida deal was the most interesting one:

The source says three different players have been discussed as potential pieces for the deal. All three players played significant time with the Marlins last season. It is unlikely that all three would be involved in the deal.

So, we’re talking major leaguers. And that makes it pretty much a given that Logan Morrison is someone being talked about. Mike Stanton has to off-limits, and it’s doubtful that Hanley Ramirez is on the block just yet (even if he is, it’s doubtful the A’s would be a strong suitor there). It’s Morrison.

Morrison would add to Oakland’s crowd of first basemen, but he’s enough better than all of the rest to secure the position immediately. The A’s could also leave him in left field for another year, but first is where he belongs for the long haul and they might as well get started on the transition now, even if it leaves Daric Barton and Brandon Allen without much of a role in Oakland’s plans.

Morrison is the kind of potent bat that the A’s will need to deal Gonzalez. It doesn’t come with premium defense, but he should threaten to make an All-Star team or two before he qualifies for free agency in five years.

Some other names likely being discussed:

Chris Coghlan – The current guess is that Coghlan, the 2009 NL Rookie of the Year, will open next year in the minors after hitting .230/.296/.368 in 269 at-bats last season. He seems primed for a rebound, though, and it would make sense for the Marlins to hang on to him if they trade Morrison.

Ricky Nolasco - The rumor lately is that the Marlins have decided to keep Nolasco, whose trade value is down after seasons of 5.06 and 4.51 ERAs. He’s also on the hook for $22 millon over the next two years. The A’s might be willing to take a shot on him anyway, but only as a secondary piece of the deal.

Chris Volstad – Volstad seems more likely than Nolasco to be part of a deal with the A’s. He probably won’t have a rotation spot anyway if the Marlins bring in another starter. The former first-round pick has been an annual disappointment, but his strikeout rate was up and his walk rate was down last year.
Logan Morrison would have to be part of the return for Gio Gonzalez
