The question isn't how do you replace him, it's how do you not.
His BABIP .268, which is about 20 points lower than career and honest to god around 50 points less than 2009-2010. He had a .586 OPS vs lefties, which was about 200 points lower than career. He also had the highest BB rate, lowest K rate, of his career, and tied for his highest LD rate of the last 5 years, that too being above his career rate. All of this suggests he got robbed of 15+ hits this year, which would dramatically change his season rates.

This isn't going to be a problem. His OPS went up every month till he plummeted in September hard. Maybe it's because he tired since the Marlins barely played Hayes for long stretches.

He's not an issue. He'll be better next year. Nothing crazy, but better.

But the Marlins should get a catcher who can start 40+ games regardless. Baker would be perfect if he's healthy to spot against 40+ right handers. Hayes is a perfect third catcher for this point in his career. He can hang in NOLA one more year. We'll see. I just don't get Buck criticism. He is a fine middle of the road starting catcher, which is not easy to replace unless you want to gamble on a Chris Snyder/Ryan Doumit type in FA.

The Red Sox are by far the most aggressive team when it comes to eating a bad contract even with years remaining on it. True other teams have no problem eating the final year, the Red Sox just don't care.

        • In one, which happened in 2005, the Red Sox ate $24 million and added a prospect.

In the other, which happened 4 years later, the Red Sox ate $18 million and added about $3.

So neither of those are close the $52 million figure you're talking about.

              • Fantasy worlds are cool.

Last night I had a fantasy that Scarlett J and Natalie P took turns taking care of me and then both went and made me a HUGE stack of french toast.

Look, if you do not agree with me that Lackey is a DFA candidate, then this really doesn't have anywhere else to go.

                        Has it been stated anywhere?

“As far as rehabilitating John Lackey, it’s a big priority for obvious reasons,” said Epstein. “We have to attack it from the physical perspective, see if there’s things we can do different with him physically to put himself in a better position to have success on the mound. We have to attack it from a fundamental standpoint. There obviously are things we can do different with him fundamentally to get his stuff and his command back to where it was. And then, from a mental standpoint. Those are the three areas that we attack with players. So, we’re going to leave no stone unturned, really with all of our players and with the organization as a whole, from those three standpoints.

“I will say this about your comment about rolling his eyes and what not: That’s nothing new. John, he’s always been kind of emotional on the mound. He’s always been demonstrative. And it always kind of looks bad on the field. It looks as if he’s showing up his teammates. It was that way in Anaheim, too. We knew that when we signed him, and we also knew that he always apologized the next day, that he’s always a great teammate except for those times that he’s rolling his eyes, as you said. His teammates forgive him. They understand. He’s tried to change, and it’s just something you can’t change. It’s an emotional reaction. We’ll continue to work with him on it, but it doesn’t make him a bad teammate. Behind the scenes, he’s actually well-respected and well-liked. I know it doesn’t look like it on the field sometimes when he’s reacting to bad results.

“But yes, we’ll continue to work with him on that, and more importantly, address issues physically, mentally and fundamentally.”
Doesn't sound like a guy who's going to dump $45.75 million for nothing. In fact it sounds like someone who is going to continue to work and try to make his monumental investment work.

                          • If he's such a candidate to be DFA'd, why would we trade our starting catcher for him?

                              • •Peter Gammons thinks Lackey may have to be traded for another bad contract like Barry Zito or Carlos Zambrano, reports WEEI.com's Paul Flannery. "I'm not sure John is ever going to fit in Boston again. I understand how upset he is but I think it's going to be hard for fans to warm up to him again," Gammons said. Gammons notes that other teams who suffered late-season breakdowns underwent major organizational changes, though he thinks Francona will return as manager.
                                I guess there's that?
