Because Alonso is a defensive buffoon.

$23 million a year for Pujols is not bad.

What the hell would we trade for Votto?

$100 million dollar payroll? I can't see that. This would give us the luxury to sign 2 very good free agents.

I believe them. You never, EVER hear this kind of talk come out of Miami, so this sounds pretty legitimate to me. Also, what's wrong with A-Ram? I'd be pretty happy if we were able to land him.

              Too good to be true.

If we get Bruce though, it would be awesome. He would be our best option considering his salary.

He would give us great payroll flexibility. With a $100 million payroll we can get Votto, Ramirez & CJ.

Is a $100 million dollar payroll realistic?

Not saying there is anything wrong with him but he's not Pujols, Sabathia or Fielder that everyone is clammoring for.

And my thing is not that the front office won't offer the big name free agents contracts but more that we aren't going to be the only guys bidding on the big name guys. If the Yankees, Red Sox or another big market team with deep pockets and a very good roster come bidding, I don't see these free agents choosing to come here instead.

Except that this is an amazing time to go after a big name 1B like Pujols and Fielder; the Yankees and Red Sox almost certainly won't have interest in them. It's going to be us and the Cubs.

I could see the Red Sox going after Reyes, which might make him tougher to get, but other than that, the Red Sox and Yankees aren't likely to make noise in the position player market.

$100 million payroll would put us 14th in baseball

Well, and St. Louis (for Pujols).
