That is what Beef is referencing.
If you go back to 2006, the Marlins had, arguably, the most impressive young rotation in baseball.
There was plenty to be optimistic about, at the time. Forgive him (Lou) for not being Walter Mercado.

I just saw the catch for the first time, and I am completely unbiased except that I think Erick is the worst sometimes...the catch was nice, but if he wouldnt have made it, I wouldve been displeased. The lean/dive thing wasnt necessary but it made it easier for a guy who does not play outfield and is not used to low/shoe string grabs. Do not be ridiculous people...it was cool, but not the coolest.

This is the problem when people don't get things from the front office. Oakland hasn't won shit, but have been one of the best run franchises in baseball for a decade. They maximize their resources. The Marlins are really good at doing this as well and they should be commended for this.

Above average play/web gem? Yeah. Some of you are talking about it, as if it was just a routine play.

And people are criticizing him, saying that it's a play that any decent CF'er makes. Some people are saying it's a play any decent CF'er makes...standing up.
There's no proof for that. None. Simple as that, really.
If you're going to tell me that those are the opinions of your eyes, I'm going to disagree. I've seen Cody Ross dive for balls like that in the past. He was good out there.
People are just saying this crap because it's the cool thing to say. "He's new at the position, there are really no stats to look at yet regarding his defense, so that must mean that every diving play he makes is a play any average outfielder catches on his feet."
Jesus, I sound like Swift.

So therefore, it's a play every CFer out there should make. You can tell by watching it that Coghlan does not need to dive for the ball. There is not anything close to full extension and in fact he almost overruns the ball. It's almost like he slid to slow down a little.
Also, yeah, it was the kind of catch that a lot of CFers would only hit the ground because they kind of slide after the catch to stop their momentum or they get a bad jump and stumble and hit the ground after because they had to extend their arm and slow down at the same time. The player in the latter scenario would roll once and jump to his feet.

We're downplaying it because it's a play everyone makes and you are acting like Cogs fucking levitated towards the ball, darted into the stands to fuck some hot chick, and then came rushing back in time to make an unbelievable diving catch while also leaving said hot chick satisfied.

Jesus, I sound like Swift.
Again, any proof that he didn't need to dive for it? PROOF...anyone need a definition?

Seems you guys are focusing more on, a center fielder has to make that play, more than, Chris Coghlan is our fucking center fielder and if anyone was expecting this kind of performance, you're a liar. I know a few of you thought, "yea this would be fine," but we're well above fine with the way he's playing. And it's awesome it's happening. It won the game today. Jesus christ.
